    Because only a certain few probably got a glimpse of Walt in his heyday. And when he broke bad, it wasn't similar to when he was young. Both young Walt and Heisenberg Walt were out of the ordinary compared to his bland norm, but they're very different versions of him. So of course people wouldn't have proclaimed that "that's the Walt I remember!"

    It was a shocking and unfamiliar.

    I disagree. We're meant to piece together the time in between where Jr. was born til when he got diagnosed with cancer. There's reason to see why he would change into the bland and impotent Walt we saw at the start.

    Overqualified science teacher that isn't able to show his true intellect and enact change? Check
    Having a son with a disability and adapting to life with him in it, where it takes up a lot of emotional labour? Check
    Financial strain? Check
    Another baby on the way? Check
    Being bought out of Grey Matter and seeing them become uber rich, thinking what could've been and possibly harbouring resent/regret? Check
    Successful brother-in-law working for the DEA and from the outside, has a productive and adrenaline-fueled career? Check
    And possibly many more.

    After so many years, all these culminating factors would've weighed on him heavily. He's a prideful SOB, so of course he'd become bland. He was going through the motions before the diagnosis sprung him into action. And from there his ego was massaged as he got what he desired - money, power, control.

    In the flashbacks to his younger days (with Gretchen for example or a pregnant Skylar) he was rather charismatic. He became bland over time due to various circumstances.

    How do you not realise this seeing as though you've watched this previously?
