Apr 11, 2020ice cube's last good song was Go to Church...which says a lot about his late-career output
Straight Outta Compton/Amerikkka's Most Wanted/k--- At Will/Death Certificate is one of the most incredible runs in rap history though

He does from me. Except for that one song Drop Girl or whatever it's called and those 2 Are We There Yet movies.
Other than that I can't find any way to possibly criticise his hustle. The man is always keeping himself busy and trying different things. I won't ever be into the Big 3 and it annoys me that it takes him away from music and movies (seriously, I feel like Mike Epps in the skit on Laugh Now, Cry Later!). But again, I can't knock the guy for trying.
I enjoyed Everythangs Corrupt for what it was worth. Couldn't stand I Am The West though.
Same with all artists who came up in a certain category, I'd love them to revisit their roots. Could you imagine a new Cube album on some laid back Dre beats? Mix in some Kendrick, Game, Snoop etc and unreleased Nate vocals. Blend new West Coast with the old and you've got a hit. I think rappers in general as they get further I to their career try to do too much to please as many people as possible.n9ne, Jay Zeus, thunderface and 5 others like this. -

Inreresting question - believe it or not Ice Cube was the first rapper I got into - I bought Death Certificate even before Eminem Show. Boyz N the Hood was my favorite movie in high school.
I think his run as #1 rapper is without question, as u said, especially like 88-93. Obvious HOF contender. After that the genre moved on, and his persona shifted easily into movies. Actually I wrote this a few years back on this exact topic:

He's pretty savvy - throwback style movie star. And once he became hollywood idk that it was he 'sold out' just that he aged out of the kind of music that made him so memorable and dynamic. That said i recently listened to some of his new stuff and didnt think it was ~bad. his skills maybe have waned...... both bc he was so political and so captured the zeitgeist around rodney king, now hes got other priorities and interests.dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl, thunderface, Ordinary Joel and 5 others like this. -

Ice Cube is easily a top 10 rapper OAT, he has a few of the best rap albums ever (The Predator, Amerikkka's most, Death Certificate) and then some really solid ones as well. He was instrumental in ushering in modern writing styles in rap during the late 80s early 90s. He's the chief architect behind one of the most legendary groups of all time. He made a top ten rap song OAT. So why isn't he respected?
Is it because of the views he sold out with his acting choices? Is he just too old now? Am I overselling him?
