    Just watched The Forbidden Room, which is simultaneously one of the most engrossing and exhaustive experiences I've ever had with a film. It's easily one of Maddin's most fleshed out homages to cinema, Such a hilarious, insane, unnerving, and ridiculously entertaining homage to myriad genre and eras of film that, despite it's slightly overlong running time, remains fascinating as it goes deeper and deeper down a rabbit hole of distorted images, dreams, and lost films.

    I started shooting this last night with @Old_Parr and I'm feeling really good about it. This is just a little taste of what we've got so far, I'm probably going to take my time with this one but I hope to have it ready sometime in September.

    @BobbyDigital I remember @FilmAndWhisky was a big fan of Forbidden Room too. I dug it as well, though perhaps maybe not quite as much. The only other I've seen from Madden is My Winnipeg (also dope). http://nextprojection.com/2015/09/30/viff-forbidden-room-utterly-mesmerizing/

    @Vahn Cool s---!

    I've heard very good things about that and Brand Upon the Brain but I've yet to see either. The only other Maddin film I've seen is Archangel, which is incredibly rough around the edges but shows a lot of potential, and charting his progression from that to the Forbidden Room is quite interesting.

    It's very interesting that two of the major Oscar contenders this year will be from lowkey American auteurs, Jeff Nichols & Derek Cianfrance (The Light Between Oceans). I love it.

    Everybody Wants Some!! is dope! A riveting and consistently entertaining look at human behavior and connections made with a warm, loving, and a self-aware, nostalgic touch.

    On the topic of the criterion sale, I just picked up Mulholland Dr. and Phoenix!

    Too early to call for me...Gosling and Stone are great together in Crazy, Stupid, Love (though I don't care for the movie), Gangster Squad is dumpster fire and La La Land isn't out yet. Stewart and Eisenberg are great together in Adventureland, I haven't seen American Ultra, and I'm seeing Cafe Society tomorrow.

    I dug Cafe Society quite a bit...For me, it was more in the class of recent hits like Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine than say...Magic in the Moonlight and To Rome with Love. It does have a similar scattershot quality as much of Allen's 2000s work, particularly in the area of character development, but here that quality is at least partially by design. Less neat and less rigidly constructed than some of its recent predecessors, Allen's core narrative of unfulfilled love (played with considerable chemistry by Stewart and Eisenberg) is surrounded with a number of diversions and asides that allow the movie to breathe and, in a way, reflect the chance experiences and incidents that directly and indirectly chart the course of one's life. Though these narrative asides may vaguely resemble the real world, the backdrop of 1930s Hollywood, on the other hand, is lovingly and fantastically idealized, strikingly captured in Allen's first digital effort by Vittario Storaro.

    Underneath all of the beautiful images and glamour, however, lies a strong undercurrent of melancholy (Allen's own weathered and resigned narration adds to this effect). Though both main characters ultimately end up with perfectly loving partners, Cafe Society nonetheless resonates with the heartache of paths not taken and the imagination of what might have been.

    ^Looks good bro.

    I like airheads.

    I watched King Hu's Touch of Zen tonight, which was pretty fantastic. First non viff submission film I've seen in a while so that was nice.

    I wish Barnes&Noble sale was worth it for me in Canada; it used to be okay, but now it's straight up more expensive than just using amazon throughout the year. I want A Brighter Summer Day and a few others.
