2/3 of the film is good. The last 3rd makes me so angry

lemme find some posts i made.

    These are sporadic.
Because the first 2/3 of the movie is so good, but as soon as the guns come out cheesy garbage. Let's k--- both parents within 2 minutes of each because why not. Let's introduce a government scheme because why not. There is so much potential and then it becomes a generic no motive killing spree because as said before why not.

The simplicity of "David" was great then he had to turn into rambo. The film was doing fine with the war backstory. It didn't have to turn the film into a war zone. Oh let's not forget the idiot little brother. "yeah I know u killed all these people, i won't tell tho" :emoji_cry:''''''(

I assume you know why the change-up to the cheesy, generic action film is there, right? It's fine if you wanted something else from the film, but the tonal shift, as jarring as it was, was completely intentional, not just because "why not" lol

While I'd agree the sudden turn in the final 3rd isn't as strong as the build-up, where the intrigue is derived from the mystery of what David plans to do, I still think, with its darkly comic tone and its tongue firmly planted in cheek throughout, that the shift isn't necessarily out of character. Plus the slick, well executed,The Lady from Shanghai -esque conclusion at the haunted house more than made up for any missteps for me.

All right, you guys were right....Norte, the End of History was pretty dope. I would have watched it sooner if I had known what a Christmas movie it was!

With that said, I'm still struggling with the final hour or so, as the film stacked egregious acts and tragedies on top of one another. It felt a tad manipulative after what was such a sure-handed first three hours.

Also thought Selma was quite strong. It reminded me very much of Spielberg's Lincoln. Both films tackle giants of American history, but instead of opting for a conventional biopic arc, both films wisely focus on a very specific, yet pivotal moment in their respective leadership careers...the passing of the 13th amendment in Lincoln and the Selma marches and the passing of the Voting Rights Act in Selma. By doing so, each film is able to successfully render their respective icons fully human, including both their personal strengths and flaws. They also skillfully convey the political machinations behind the scenes that are necessary to realize ideals and bring about social change.

Partly selected so my girlfriend and I could have a joint top #1, her picks being mainstream for the most part, mine awards bait. I really did enjoy it though. Wrote this review/blog on its strengths: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andy-hoglund-/richard-pryor-haunts-top-_b_6324710.html

Though I'm still catching up on 2014 releases, here are the films released in NY in January that are on my radar:

January 2- Li'l Quinquin (Bruno Dumont)
January 9- Beloved Sisters (Dominik Graf), When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism (Corneliu Porumboiu)
    January 16- Blackhat (Michael Mann)
January 23- The Duke of Burgundy (Peter Strickland), Mommy (Xavier Dolan)
January 30- Timbuktu (Abderrahmane Sissako), Girlhood (Céline Sciamma), Hard to Be a God (Aleksey German)
