Yep I did, Inside Llewyn Davis too. I still love both of those movies, but The Wolf of Wall Street has really held up well for me.

Wow...I liked American Sniper, even though it was executed in an extremely safe manner, but nowhere near the greatest war films of all time. It's a film based on reality, that hides the reality of the main character. Or at least minimalizes it to the point of giving the audience a false sense of who Chris Kyle was, as the man Chris Kyle, not the war hero.

So I saw Hard to Be a God last night...All of the early word I had read about it was basically true, though it had a bit more humor than I was expecting, albeit absolutely perverse.

Shot on location in h---, it's like if Fellini, instead of capturing la dolce vita, decided to point his roving camera towards a s----stained, medieval nightmare (It is indeed disgusting for its entire 170 minutes). The depth of its mise en scene and the scope of its world-building are astounding. One gets the sense while watching it that if the camera were to move indefinitely in any direction, one would still be stuck in this grotesque hellhole that German created. Despite its expansive canvas, German often keeps the camera uncomfortably close to the characters and the environment. When coupled with the characters' frequent tendency to stare directly into the camera and, many times, seemingly address it, it conveys a disconcerting "You are there" sense of immersion, but one in which the viewer is unable to change the world nor turn away from it. In this regard, it puts us in the same shoes as Rumata, the lead character and "God" in the title.

At times, the film can walk the line between grueling and captivating, but I've certainly never seen a film like it and probably won't again for a long, long time.

That Tye Sheridan was in Tree of Life, Mud, and Joe before he had pubes. Kid is something special.

So Birdman won the DGA and is now probably the frontrunner over Boyhood for Best Picture...which is disappointing.

At Berlin, I've seen really great reviews so far for Andrew Haigh's 45 Years, Jafar Panahi's Taxi and Alex Ross Perry's Queen of Earth. Malick's Knight of Cups also just premiered. The initial responses I saw were positive, but I believe reviews might be embargoed.
