I think it’s because his albums in the past did everything they were supposed to - they satisfied us. Whereas these days, with his newer projects, most of us are always left with the feeling of “what if?” There’s classic moments but less classic runs due to over-recording, too many target audiences & bad selection choices which didn’t plague his trio.
