This album changed my whole perspective on music. What an absolute statement from an artist that was written off after the Taylor Swift incident and initial public reaction to 808s. From Good Friday’s to the official release. What an era.

    what’s everyone’s top 3?

    I’d have to go:
    Lost in the World
    Runaway
    Gorgeous

It’s hard to believe this was 10 years ago man. Sophomore year of college goin thru my first real long term relationship...we’d been dating for over a year and things were getting super rocky but this album (and Big Boi’s from earlier in the year) got me through the winter and spring til we finally broke up in the summer lol

in recent years i’ve played a handful of the good friday songs a lot more than the album itself. i’d say a lot of it still works extremely well and some of it just too overwrought for its own good—that’s the double edged sword of making everything so blown up and ornate which, to be fair, works better here than on most other albums, period.

one emerging consensus i’ve seen is that the first half is this so phenomenally good that it obscured some shakiness on the back half. i don’t really agree with that at all. i think “h--- of a life” is minor but still pretty good; the stuff i don’t ever feel like returning to is, like, the intro, power, all of the lights, monster.

This gon' be a long paragraph about... THE GREATEST HIP-HOP ALBUM SO FAR. (I would say "of all time" but who knows what's coming sooner or later, right?)

I wasn't Kanye fan back in like idk. 2009? 2008? I liked a few songs, these popular ones, but I never really listened to the whole Kanye album. I wasn't a hater tho, not at all. I just wasn't into his music that much. I was really into that lyrical miracle s--- mixed with "real Hip-Hop" sound. Anything more artistic than DJ Premier sampled beat / Dr. Dre piano mixed with synths and hard drums was a no-no for me for some weird reason. My homie (back then, f--- him now, I hope he got a--- cancer for trying to hit on my gf back then) sent me a link to "Power" by Ye. Boy, I was blown away by this song. When I first heard that "Ohh eeee Ohh eee" I knew it was special, like not that typical rap project I would bump at the time. Something clicked in me. Song itself was my go to when I needed inspiration. Keep in mind I started rapping back in 2010 so this was some serious ego boost for me.

For some other reason... this was the only song I've heard off this album untill I broke up with this girl that my ex-homie tried to smash. It was 2014, I was kinda f----- over that relationship ending, so I was bumping everything, literally every rap album I could just to zone myself out. f---ing Kanye appeared on my playlist again. I listened to the whole album. I was heavy into Childish Gambino artistic s--- in 2014 so imagine how f---ing crazy MBDTF sounded to me for the first time - 4 years late. I think I listened to this album back to back at least 20 times in a few days. I was into that artistic phase so album like this made me go spastic. I don't think I was as inspired as I was back in 2014.

2017. I moved out of my parents house. 700 km away from the family house. Guess what album I was bumping in that train ride - MBDTF. "Runaway" was the anthem.

Guess what song I was bumping just the day before I proposed to my gf at that time, now wife - POWER, you MFer.

THAT'S JUST PERSONAL SIDE OF THIS ALBUM.

If I would go with artistic opinion I would go for 2-3 days non-stop posting... beats, lyrics, samples, synths, drums, drum brakes, Kanye singing, features, particular sounds.

The best Hip-Hop album so far, I really doubt any human being will be able to top this ever, but once AI take over, well... we'll see.

One of those extremely rare albums where the whole thing is absolutely perfect, back-to-front. And I dont just mean the quality of each song, I mean the entire experience, its so immersive it feels like you're in a movie. Or some kind of VR. Even the weakest moments are absolutely f---ing spectacular. I remember during that insane Good Fridays hype era when So Appalled dropped (back to back with Christian Dior Denim flow, iirc), it was like nothing I'd ever heard before, it was so rich and futuristic and felt like it had been so meticulously crafted. 10 years later and I still get that feeling listening to this. masterpiece, classic in every sense of the word.

The excitement every Friday of waiting for him to drop that weeks song was wild. Man, every one came through too. Lupe snapped, Rae snapped, Big Sean, f---ing a young J. Cole came through with a life changing verse at that point. s---, just thinking about that time puts a smile on my face

about to go throw on the vinyl
