Good luck man. I quit smoking about 8 years ago now after a strong 20 a day habit of over 15 years. Best thing I ever done. Everybody does things differently but this is what worked for me:
I started vaping. I said to myself that I wasn't doing it to quit but as a replacement. I smoked the highest mg fluid I could find. It really worked for me as I found the benefits straight away, I took a few puffs in the office instead of walking down 3 flights of steps to go outside so I ended up more productive at work because I wasn't wasting hours a day by going outside smoking.
As time went by o had well and truly swapped smoking for vaping so at that point I decided to see if I could condition my body into quitting. I stuck with tabacco flavoured fluid for everything except the end.
Step 1 - I went from 18mg to 12mg nicotine fluid. When I don't this I found to begin with I was vaping like crazy but I eventually got used to it. I can't remember the exact time frames now but roughly 3-6 months later I tried the next step
Step 2 - switched from 12mg to 6mg nicotine. Same thing as above.
Step 3 - switched from 6mg to 3mg (mixed 6mg and 0mg together)
Step 4 - switched from 3mg to 0mg
Step 5 - switched from tabacco flavour to random fruity flavours
Step 6 - At this stage this was the biggest thing to break; the process of vaping. This took a lot of willpower as it was the most conscious thing about the whole process. Don't know how I done it tbh but I'm 8 years of not smoking so it worked.
This whole process probably took about 2-3 years but it was worth it!Wreckless, Ordinary Joel, aleeex1923 and 7 others like this.Nov 18, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

I'll be one year smoke free on the super bowl. I was also 10 years in. Called the Florida quit line and they hooked me up with patches and gum. It wasnt easy but the main key is to understand cravings only last about 3 minutes and as time passes they get further apart. Get some tooth picks because half of the habit was having something in your hands.JEB, Worm, Ordinary Joel and 5 others like this. -

d--- bro that's straight torture. I haven't smoked in years but when I did I was up to a pack a day and more when I drank. Tried the gum, tried to vape and cut back similar to you but I was just giving myself more of an addictive drug every day. I finally said f--- it and went cold turkey which was the best method for me at least. It s----d for 3 weeks, mostly when drinking and then slowly week by week the cravings went away.Wreckless, aleeex1923, icecube and 3 others like this. -

Congrats and good luck @Translucent ! Never been a better time to quit than with a respiratory illness pandemic.
With things like smoking a big part of it is the ritual aspect as people have said. Quitting a bad habit is a great time to introduce a new habit (whether it be a “good” habit or something neutral like chewing gum) to replace it as a new ritual.
I replaced having a drink in the evening with having a cup of sleepy tea and never looked back.Ordinary Joel, aleeex1923, Thy and 2 others like this.Nov 18, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Good for you man! I had my last cigarette in nov 2019 so it’s been one year for me. It’s doable and you’ll thank yourself for quitting in the long run. h--- it’ll only take 1-2 weeks for you to start breathing deeper and better!Ordinary Joel, Ricky, JMG and 2 others like this. -

Exactly, my biggest mistake when I first quit smoking was to replace that habit with food and gained 30kgs (65 pounds) in one year.DKC, Translucent, BIGFOOT and 1 other person like this. -

Good luck you can do it, first time I did it I had a check up when I started a new job and the nurse told me my left lung barely makes any noises and it scared the s--- out of me.
And after 10 years I got a new job in Amsterdam and smoked only week and when I came back home and weed wasn't around thats when I started to smoke cigarettes.
Also I was always a heavy smoker : 2 packs of Marlboro Red everyday I smoke one cig every 20-25 minutes. When SIDE B dropped and I was awake for 24 hours I smoked 4 packs and felt like s---!Translucent, BIGFOOT and Ordinary Joel like this. -

Hardest part I think is disassociating cigarettes with a certain routine (i.e. morning routine) I have a very specific morning routine that always includes a few cigsDKC, Ordinary Joel and aleeex1923 like this. -

Good luck to you my man, I did this when I was 22y old after 8 years of smoking and started again 10 years later and now I'm smoking for 1 year and is very veeeeeery hard to quit this time.
First time I did it I just woke up one day and said let me try to quit and it worked for 10 years and now I'm trying to do the same almost everyday and I can't!BIGFOOT, Ordinary Joel and Translucent like this. -

Yep, that was the hardest part for me. Not having something in my hands. Ended up being an annoying b------ that fiddles with pens all the time. I even got a fidget sooner for secret Santa once because it's so annoying.Ordinary Joel, JMG and Translucent like this. -
