Feb 15, 2021 If Jay retired after the Black Album, Em retired after Cheers(Obie's album), or DMX retired after Grand Champ, who do you think will have the best legacy in hip hop out of the 3?
Feb 15, 2021 Jay-Z imo. Post-03 Jay has his two weakest albums. Eminem ofc would be much closer to Jay in this universe. Don't think his later work has affected DMX's legacy that much.
Feb 15, 2021 Jay. Pretty much flawless till 2003. Em very close though maybe even tied. I'm glad they didn't tho because even if they released some average / bad stuff that might 'hurt' their legacy it also gave us music like WTT, MTBMB and lots of dope songs and features. Not really up to date w dmx so dunno about him
Feb 15, 2021 yeah lol, Kingdom Come, BP3 and MCHG are worth it if I get AG and 444. Encore, Recovery, MMLP2 and Revival are worth it if I get Relapse, MTBMB and Side B
Feb 15, 2021 This is a tough one, I think it’d be easier if Jay hadn’t put out 4:44. Edit: just read OP properly, even with the cut off I think it’s very similar, Jay & Em are pretty much tied & it would come down to personal preference. With them 2 being on my favourite list, I can’t decide.
Feb 15, 2021 Exactly. I mean in the end when people talk about an artist catalog they will count good and bad albums and look at the score.. But in reality a bad album u can just delete of your phone / laptop or whatever. Every good album (or even song) is an extra piece of music I can enjoy, regardless if its surrounded by bad music. This is not a 'fair' way to judge an album or catalog, but to me every song or album I enjoy is cool to me and what I dont like, I don't listen. So like u said, f--- Revival and, for example, that R Kelly collab, wouldn't wanna miss out on Deja Vu and Lost Ones (for example)
Feb 15, 2021 Jay Z could have retired in 2001 and would win this because that's when he started dating Beyonce. Nobody could top that.
Feb 15, 2021 Honestly it's only a few rappers where people obsess over their discog having to be close to perfect. Esp older rappers, nobody gives af if Ice Cube is putting out bad albums now, it's expected. He still made a run with three of the greatest albums ever in a row. Save for like, the song Accidental Racist, nobody is giving LL Cool J s--- about his modern output lol. Like I said above too, who cares what DMX releases unless its good. Snoop is still a legend even though he's had tremendous highs and lows after Doggystyle. Even 50, do people really care that his discog after GRODT starts declining? Obv not a good thing but no one is obssessing over it. Only really like Dre, Em, Jay, Kanye, Kendrick, Drake are people who are really like obsessing over every bad album in their discogs.
Feb 15, 2021 Bro he finished his show (the one I attended) with it and all of us put up our lighters / phone lights during the chorus it was absolutely beautiful I almost shed a tear watching this too tbh so f---ing beautiful the fact that he lost his voice completely doesn't even matter lol But yeah I wouldn't wanna miss out on the good songs even it it means the album itself is average
Feb 15, 2021 Jay had 8 albums to his name by the end of 2003 and was consistently great across all of them
Feb 15, 2021 Hov had an untouchable run. BP2 would have been his weakest but I've always thought its overhated. I don't DMX's legacy would have changed much. I mean he's only released... 2 albums? since Grand Champ? And they both went pretty under the radar. I dont think anyones been checking for new DMX since. Em would have had a mad solid legacy if he called it quits in 03. Nowhere near Jay's but still top tier
Feb 15, 2021 Jay-Z easily. 2001? Eminem easily. 1999? DMX easily. All depends. 2003 though? Jay-Z, all the way. By then, Jay's catalog was d----near close to perfect. Straight From The Lap EP and some of D12 World's tracks had already leaked. My Band came out and I knew it was the end of Em being in his prime by then. Oh, and Grand Champ was a'ight. DMX's last solid album was "....And Then There Was X". That came out in 1999.
