Feb 18, 2021 I'm just going to use this to document interviews I think are worth a watch that may have flew under the radar, feel free to add to the thread ________________________________________________________ Kenny Beats on the Regional Sounds of Hip-Hop (Hosted by Rick Rubin) Podcast link - https://brokenrecordpodcast.com/#/episode-90-kenny-beats/ Interesting if you have an hour to k---
Feb 22, 2021 Mogul Podcast Season 1 is About Chris Lighty, an NYC A&R who represented a bunch of NY artists from Tribe to Nas to 50 Cent. Season 2 is about 2 Live Crew, Miami bass, and the birth of southern hip-hop. Season 3, which I haven't listened to yet, is a series of interviews and standalone eps called Mogul Mixtapes. A few links (but there's a bunch more: Ludacris The Secret History of Emo Rap 2Pac's Denim Suits JPEGMAFIA
Feb 22, 2021 I'm really torn on this one. Cuz it's obviously very detailed and mostly well researched, but it strays into rap geniusy territory at times. I haven't listened to any of it since he started on spotify so that's good to know he's upped his production value cuz in the earlier ones he'd mispronounce words all the time, the vocal quality wasn't the greatest, and he'd always have that dry mouth voice click that people get from drinking too much coffee and not enough water.
Feb 22, 2021 I don't like the overanalyzing of music to the extent where it takes the magic away. Just me though
Feb 22, 2021 Yeah, exactly why I'm torn on it—because it's really cool hearing about the background and making of the album, but considering every single reach of an explanation for every single line is annoying. Also, I'm sure Jay-Z's Decoded was much cooler in 2010 before RG was ubiquitous, but I read it last year and I ended up skipping reading most of the lyrical explanations because they were so boring and obvious. Beyond the lyric explanations that memoir was kinda trash in general. edit: gonna make a thread about rap memoirs
Feb 22, 2021 I actually just hate hearing how music came together as far as technically, ESPECIALLY the layering of instruments. I imagine it would be very useful to know as a producer but I'm not very interested in producing so now I just listen to certain songs and know all the samples and what the sounds are, its almost like the songs boring to me now. That s--- ruined one of my favorite smashing pumpkins songs I vowed never to watch that s--- ever again, I saw one pop up for POWER by kanye in my recommended i blocked that whole channel f--- that
Feb 22, 2021 Yeah I didn't mean I like that technical stuff specifically (though I do think that's cool sometimes), but the context/story behind the artist's mindstate and creative vision for a piece of work.
Feb 22, 2021 when they expand on the feeling their music evokes, the reason why they made it, that's ballin. when they make content for teenagers to recognize esoteric samples during their reaction videos, that ain't ballin
Feb 22, 2021 To me, it will never get better than The Combat Jack Show during their prime run. When the crew was still intact, doing shows at PNC radio, Just Blaze high key flexing on everyone. I didn’t even give a f--- about the interviews, I just wanted that barbershop banter. That NYC, cracking jokes on each other vibe. That to me put the show on a different level. Combat paved the way for most Hip Hop podcasts, especially Budden and NORE. I’ve attended events he put together back when he was still alive. He was a legend RIP I check out Budden and NORE occasionally. Never really cared for Mal or Rory tbh and NORE slobbering all over the place and cutting his guests off gets annoying after awhile. Premium Pete, who was part of The Combat Jack Show, has some good, under the radar interviews. Talib Kweli finally put his big mouth to use and put together a decent podcast.
Feb 22, 2021 Maybe I should change the title, I don't mean daily/weekly watches I meant more episodes that are very interesting.
Feb 23, 2021 He hosted the first season of the Mogul podcast I linked if you haven't listened to that before (though tbh as a New Yorker you prob lived thru a lot of what they talk about lol). He unfortunately passed before season 2. He's impossible to replace, but Jinx/Brandon Jenkins does a great job with it as well.
Feb 23, 2021 I was aware of the Chris Lighty tribute, though I never listened to it. I didn’t realize Mogul was an ongoing thing. Combat died not too long after doing the Lighty episode. I am familiar with Jinx from his work with Complex and Budden. He’s okay but he’s not Combat Jack in his prime on PNC. Mogul seems like a cool, docu podcast series. But the old Combat Jack Show banter is what made Combat Jack a legend in my eyes. He was a great interviewer, asked good questions and was well researched. And you can tell he loved Hip Hop and loved talking about Hip Hop. But I didn’t even care about the interviews or about them talking about Hip Hop. I was there for the barbershop s--- talking which they did well. When the crew broke up and Combat Jack started doing the show mostly by himself, I wasn’t as avid a listener. It just wasn’t the same show anymore.
