Mar 22, 2015TPAB is so overrated lol. People were calling it a classic 5mins after it was released. It's a good album but not the masterpiece people make it out to be. Lol @ Eminem Show being a all time great album too

You know there's something fishy about an album when opponents of the record desperately try to claim that its "just good!!" and nothing more. @Brubbles you call Eminem albums either "just good" or outright awful on a daily basis, and can defend your opinion without batting an eye. Explain why TPAB is "just good," without only referring to the people being hyperbolic in their praise.

At the Grammy Awards of 2003 it was nominated for Album of the Year and became Eminem's third straight LP to win the award for Best Rap Album. It has been certified 8x Platinum by the RIAA, has sold over 9.2 million copies in the U.S., and over 19 million albums worldwide. You can't beat that, numbers don't lie, it will always be an all time great album, whether or not you hide your inner stan it's still a album hard to conquer.Ordinary Joel, Motor City, Dino and 2 others like this.Nov 23, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Yeah the attempts to underplay this album are almost as bad as the hype surrounding it
At least the hype is out of a genuine place of love for the album/music
The ones trying to downplay it are just focusing all the conversational hyperbole and ignoring all the good discussoons worth having about the record @Mathias @BrubbelsOrdinary Joel, what, FlawlessT and 2 others like this. -

You know there's something fishy about an album when supporters desperately try to claim that it is a classic. @Koolo you called MMLP2 and ShadyXV both classics (while in fact they are s-----y albums), and now the same thing for this album. The factors which I feel put the guys you've mentioned where they are when we have these kinds of discussions have to be:
Jay's longevity (even though his discog has its duds, he's put out music at a level longer than almost anyone else with multiple classics sprinkled in there), Kanye's consistency (his discog speaks for itself. even if you don't like any of his albums, you have to accept at very least that they're all good if not classic), The impact of Eminem (when Eminem came into the genre, had huge impact & SSLP, MMLP, TES are all regarded to as classic albums. Kendrick has achieved that similar impact imo and the jury is still out on his 3). Big & Pac are up obviously up there, but that's more self explanatory. Pac's progression was crazy, especially with such a short lifespan/career. And Biggie probably had the best flow of all time
Kendrick definitely already deserves to be put in the discussion, with 3 extremely solid albums (S.80 was amazing, GKMC being a classic, TPAB I'd say is too early to give that nod imo since I'm not fully into it yet) and then the KLEP & OD as well as the rest of his catalogue.. He's had an interesting progression but I think his most interesting work is to come in the future. Really hard to say what it would take to warrant him being in the discussion, but he's basically almost there. See where his next album goes and take it from there
edit: Nas deserves to be in this discussion since it seems like mainstream rappersOrdinary Joel, Jay Daniels, ROsimba and 2 others like this. -

smh. gkmc is a classic. biggie had two masterpieces that dwarf it. section 80 is a very good record and butterfly is middling. saying kendrick has surpassed biggie is like saying "i avoid music made before 2010 at all cost."Ordinary Joel, Peter Parker, Section80 and 1 other person like this. -

well, you weren't wrong before, and you aren't wrong now. kool g rap 100% pioneered the style, and there's no doubt that the guys who eventually popularized it--rae, biggie, ghost, nas, to a lesser extent jay--were close listeners to g rap and borrowed a lot from him.
it's important to remember that cuban linx and it was written were made concurrently. so while the latter was read overwhelmingly by critics and "real hip hop heads" upon its release as a reactionary sell-out move, it was no more calculated than the purple tape. nas just had the disadvantage of having a prior solo album that comes from a different perspective.
biggie's popularity is probably what made the mafioso stuff endure for the rest of the 90s, but i think he was no more a pioneer than rae and nas,Ordinary Joel, Charlie Work, FlawlessT and 1 other person like this.Nov 23, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Kdot also has such a great backlog of songs that aren't "mainstream" like the ones from the ep, od, various other mixtapes etc. So if you take those into consideration I think he already is, but yeah just give it a few more years (and another album) and he'll be in every discussion.
P.S. 808s and heartbreaks is awful plz take it out of the op, thank you.Ordinary Joel, Piiizzy, Motor City and 1 other person like this. -

I'm not sure about that claim, from the looks of things it came out to a lot of critical acclaim from several publications at the time of it's release. Not to mention it earned 4.5 Mics which was possibly the highest distinction a hip-hop album could get in those days, obviously retrospect has been kind to Biggie but it wasn't just a popular album.Ordinary Joel, Peter Parker and CODEiNE DEMON like this. -
