Apr 17, 2021This will be starting in the next few weeks, but I wanted to give everyone time get a copy of the book.
This book is well worth it for a physical copy because of all the graphics and illustrations, but please let me know if you need a digital copy and I can provide it.
The Rap Year Book by Shea Serrano
How many of you would be interested? I don't have any concrete plans for how exactly this would work yet, I'm just gauging general interest first. I know that @Jimelej @jankland expressed interest.
But a few thoughts on how it:
-Would be super low-key/casual, cuz I want it to be fun/interesting and not feel like homework.
-I'd probably highlight a few topics/questions each time but no need to write an essay (unless you want to lol). If you wanna just read along with everyone that's fine too.
-People would also have the floor to ask questions/highlight pieces they thought were cool or want to know more about.
-I'd provide a (free) digital copy to everyone (but of course you're free to buy a physical if you want to)
-I think it would be cool to start with something to do with super early hip-hop (1970s-early 80s), cuz I didn't know much about this era beyond the basics until I actively sought out information about it.
Definitely down for suggestions for how this could work as well!

Actually, this might be a better starting point because CSWS can be a little dry.
The Rap Year Book teaches a solid amount of early rap history and is easily digestible because it's broken into one song per chapter. Kinda tells the story of hip-hop up through 2014. The only issue is that it isn't available as audiobook and wouldn't really make sense to listen to it (if you look inside you'll see why)—but I think this would be easy to read a few chapters a week for even if you have a busy life.

Sounds like there's enough interest here to warrant possibly moving forward—I only say possibly because I only wanna start it if I'm certain I'll have time to keep things consistent. I'ma need to think on some things.
If you're interested in helping/have suggestions for the way it would work/have suggestions for books plz reach out!Ordinary Joel, icecube, BIGFOOT and 1 other person like this.
