It isn't really that simple. As a species that generally identifies through visual familiarity, it's in our nature to feel uncomfortable around those different from ourselves. Simplistically, yes, it does stem from ignorance, but the ignorance was established long before humanity was socially established and civilized (in comparison to now).

In it's most basic form, racism is the nature of being uncomfortable with the unfamiliar.
