@1999 co-sign on Mud, rly great. interesting your love on PBTP, i thought it was ok left me a little cool or something.

follow me guys. https://letterboxd.com/hoglundan/films/diary/ just watched Vanishing Point, which influenced Baby Driver, Death Proof etc. (one thing i would say about the justified love for Uncut Gems is people should check out the original bad lieutenant with harvey kietel.) also been binging on brother @Swizz's advice all the best picture winners ive missed over the years. fun but sometimes tedious.

Mud is one of the most rewatchable films ever, maybe I just relate to it growing up in the south and all. His other film I mentioned Take Shelter is just as incredible. Whats your lbxd?

Also for 2020 one of my favorite films that wasnt nominated was SPREE. Just a good action flick

Oh d--- I gotchu. Yeah Safdie bros are dope (Heaven Knows What is a must) as well as Lanthimos, Sacred Deer was great. I like Waititi too but not as much (although I need to see WWDITS). As much as I like sci-fi and horror films I've drifted more towards realism based stories.

Two of my favorites would be Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine) and Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, MUD) if you haven't seen those 4 films you really should. TPBTP is my favorite movie ever.

I like Cary a lot, True Detective season 1 is incredible. If you liked TD you should definitely watch Maniac with Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. He directed the entire series, probably my favorite miniseries ever tbh.

Yeah exactly, I was actually going to compare it to the convo about Melle Mel in another thread recently. Of course there's been bigger, better, flashier rappers than Melle Mel, but that doesn't mean "The Message" isn't a classic song and he wasn't a super important and influential rapper.

lol come on man it came out in 1941, there's obviously better movies that have come out since then but it's a super influential and important film. Regardless, I thought the best parts of Mank were the stuff about WRH/Upton Sinclair (honestly I'm a sucker for films about journalism tho lol), and I thought the writing of Citizen Kane was an interesting frame for that political/journalistic era (and vice versa, zooming in on what influenced Mank's writing).

Mank had a lot going for it—great director, great musician, an interesting historical time period for both Hollywood and America in general—but was still underwhelming. It’s one I def wanna revisit down the line cuz I could see it growing on me. Liked it but didn’t love it.
