No acknowledgement of Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys or Weezy’s masterpiece Rebirth?

As someone who's more into metal and in that community I would say it's 100% fact that metal/rock fans are more into rap than the other way around. I've legit never heard any rock fan say something like "can't spell crap without rap" lmfao. Take skaters for example skate community is heavy into both, I think rap fans in general are closed minded when it comes to having a wide taste in music.

Run-DMC was before my time but I know they made a song with Aerosmith that was groundbreaking, however I don’t think they made a whole album or project that was rock influenced.

Beastie Boys is a tricky one. To me, they are more of a rock outfit even though they rap. They started out as a punk group and then became rappers. However their whole style is fusing rock and rap, so it’s not like I could just boil it down to one album.

Rebirth is terrible imo. I would probably put one of Kid Cudi’s rock projects on the list before Rebirth lmao.

Might have been before your time. I’m now 30. 15 years ago I saw nothing but people post on forums how “rap was crap” etc. However, this new wave of rock has been influenced by Nu-metal and rap. YouTuber PunkRockerMBA actually has a great video about this.

26 years old the only time I can think of rock or metal fans being like that is Metallica and pantera time period and country rock fans probably are like that. I feel like metal and rock fans always liked to brag about listening to both genres like it made them cool at least that's how it was back when I was in high school.

Haven't read the article but surely Rick Ruben's take on hip-hop is near the top of influences? He may have tarnished his legacy a bit with the Em co-sign but doesn't stop what he done before.

While Rick's work with em is mostly dogshit I wouldn't say it's affected his legacy besides em fans.

I mean the article is more about artists and rap projects that have a rock twist to it. Only producer-led album on there is The Grey Album.

I've seen some isolated cases of someone saying that phrase or a variation of it("Music is like candy, you gotta throw the rappers away") but, overall, I agree with you.

There's actually more cases of rock publications acknowledging hip hop than vice versa. I remember ironically getting into a lot of great indie/underground rap just following reviews from Robert Christgau.

Rick Rubin's legacy is undeniable, even if people hate his work with Em. Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, he defined a whole era of hip-hop, then later 99 Problems with Jay and Berzerk with Em was solid too.
