Jul 19, 2021If you can only afford to pay $3-$8 an article then don't even offer to pay at all. It's just insulting and writing is already so undervalued as it is. To start a blog you need at least one of the following:
1. a large sum of money to pay writers a reasonable rate
2. friends/writers who share your vision and/or will work for free
3. the want to write for the sake of writing
4. a niche focus that people can't get from P4K or Complex or Rolling Stone or XXL etc.
Take it from someone who was involved in the creation of multiple rap blogs—it's a TON of work. We had:
@Koolo designing and marketing and funding
@Slyk coding and designing and writing
@Mike Tyson designing and writing and blogging and using industry connects from JCN
Me editing and writing and blogging
And tons of other posters like @Captain Awesome AKA Papa @Narsh @Blaza @ODB @Peter Parker @Charlie Work @Flacko and a bunch more I'm sure I'm forgetting were doing some combination of writing and editing and blogging and social media stuff.
All of us were working for free or actively spending money. I had an amazing time helping build it and have no regrets, but it wasn't sustainable in the longrun.
So basically, what I'm saying is do the blog for yourself/love of the game cuz you're not gonna make money, or if you want to make money then pitch to other outlets.

Lol what? Excuse f---ing me, a picture says a thousand words and if you expect to start at $100 per article from nothing you're pretty f---ing entitled. Do you know how many hours of free/cheap work I had to do in my field to become a professional?
Bruhziez this is tpk the autismo. It's not like he's a big brand able to hire employees. It's a homemade website that gets f--- all hits, people who lack experience should want to do it for free as a starting point (if they are passionate) to help both parties... I sent you a DM. I’ll reiterate here:
I can take you under my wing. Basically, I'll give you game on how to run your own blog in exchange for writing for me. So while you wouldn't be getting paid, you would get a link to your site from mine, I can explain to you how digital advertising works, and you build up credibility as a writer. You already know how to use WordPress, so that's a good start.
My one requirement would be that you write 1 feature length article of 1,000 words about once a month. And I will assign you an article weeks ahead of time, so you can do research.
For context, my blog got a little more than 9,000 visitors and 8,000 unique views last month.Ordinary Joel, Inland Empire Rapper and DKC like this. -

one of the most stressful times here tbh. trying to stay up to date with every breaking event and post an article + original content + weekly recaps + maintenance and all those whatnots + the forum side was unhealthy. i recall it f---ing with my real-life work. not good.Ordinary Joel, Altereagle416 and DKC like this.Dec 22, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

$100 per 1,000 words not per article. That's 10 cents. CENTS per word. Realistically, no beginner would be writing a 1,000 word feature from jump street. I'm just saying $3-8 per article is insulting and you need to pay for quality.
Why should they build a brand with no equity? No traffic? What do they get out of it? Like I said, if there's people who really believe in the vision, they'll do it for for free but $3-8 per article is insulting and basically saying your writing isn't worth s---.Flacko, 1999 and Ordinary Joel like this. -

Honestly, not yet. But I’ve used it to help me freelance for Complex and other sites. Part of the reason is that I wasn't focused on making written content when I first started. It originally was a podcast, and the website was to host behind-the-scenes content.
The layout isn't good. It looks outdated af. Look at modern magazine sites and their design and ask what you can do to make your site feel site more like them.DKC, Ordinary Joel and 1999 like this. -

As a professional writer, gfy with $3-8 per article. I want to know where you came up with that arbitrary number.
An early career journalist/ writer should be making .10 cents per word on an article. Meaning they should at bare minimum make $100 for a 1,000 word article.
Look my guy, it isn't easy building a blog. It took me years to build traction. But if you make good content people will notice it. As for growing it, get on adsense like everyone else. If you have truly good content and people really f--- with your vision, you might be able to get some people to write for your blog for free so long as it's an occasional thing.
And for the love of god, change your layout.
