Matthew Hughes, 28, entered the plea Thursday in Macomb County Circuit Court in front of Judge Edward Servitto in exchange for dismissal of charges of first-degree home invasion, malicious destruction of property between $1,000 and $20,000 and assault of a jail employee. He pleaded the day before his trial was scheduled to start Friday. Matthew HughesMACOMB COUNTY JAIL PHOTO Hughes, who has been held in the county jail in lieu of bond since his arrest in April 2020, will be released after his Sept. 22 sentencing, under the deal; he will have served 17 months. Hughes’ attorney, Richard Glanda, said the plea was “in the best interests” of his client. “If he goes to trial and forces Eminem to fly from L.A. and testify, and he gets convicted, he’s going to the joint,” Glanda said. “This way, he has served all of his time in county jail and won’t have to go to (state) prison.” Hughes, who was homeless, broke into Eminem’s home in Manchester Estates at Heydenreich Road and Cass Avenue in Clinton Township about 4 a.m. April 5, 2020. Eminem was awakened by the noise of Hughes breaking a kitchen door window with a brick paver. Hughes allegedly said he told the rap superstar he was there to “k---” him, according to court testimony. Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, was able get Hughes to leave the house, where he was met by security guards who held him until police arrived. Ten months earlier, June 1, 2019, Hughes illegally entered a Rochester Hills home’s property looking for the rapper. He was convicted of misdemeanor breaking and entering, illegal entry, according to records from the 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Judge Julie Nicholson to 90 days in jail, with 40 days of credit. The no contest plea is treated as an admission of guilt in criminal court but provides some legal protection in civil court. Second degree home invasion’s maximum penalty is 15 years in prison while first-degree home invasion charge is punishable by up to 20 years. The malicious destruction of property charge between $1,000-$20,000 is a five-year felony, and the assault charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
