:wth:What do you mean? Whether or not a song has substance is a subjective claim. "Legacy" to some has substance and to others, it is corny pop garbage. "Brainless" to some has substance but to others, it may not. A track's substance solely depends on the individual listener, despite the initial intentions of the artist. For example, I feel that "Guts Over Fear" is a f---ing exceptional track from the verses to the chorus, to the music video to the structuring of the rhymes (the same rhyme scheme throughout the entire track). I feel that track has loads of substance BUT there are probably some other people who are convinced it is corny and just "another pop track with a female singer on the hook, pandering to the lowest common dominator of fans". You get what I'm saying?

Too many people are just saying what THEY don't like about Eminem which is fine but to then make the extra leap, saying that these subjective claims are indicative of an objective failure in execution and artistry on Eminem's part makes no logical sense. Another example: people saying he cannot ride a beat and is off beat and s--- (even with Right for Me). This is objectively false. If you listen to his verses carefully, they are precisely on beat, synched with even the most minute details of the instrumental. Just because one doesn't enjoy it or can't follow it doesn't mean it is 'off beat' on an objective platform. Compared to many other rappers, Eminem may be the most meticulous with his flow.

Sometimes, its like some of yall don't understand how music/art works.

SSLP came out BEFORE 8 Mile. Not surprising though considering your first Eminem album was MMLP2.

When I say substance I'm talking about songs that have meaning to you. Cleaning Out My Closet, Sing For The Moment, When I'm Gone, The Way I Am, Beautiful, Not Afraid & Legacy are all examples of records Eminem's made you or the average listener can relate to. Everything after Recovery was lacking in that, which became backlash. BME was rappity rap/Slim Shadyesque records besides Lighters & Take From Me. MMLP2 had Headlights, Stronger Than I Was (song's not even the correct theme for the MMLP series) & Legacy, I guess Beautiful Pain as well. Everything else on MMLP2 was either him rapping to impress, making ok-great songs with rock samples, or trying to recapture the MMLP themes with good/bad results, but most of it wasn't relatable and it was all over the place. Then Shady XV has Guts Over Fear, Die Alone & if I wanna reach Twisted but my point is if he's not able to successfully make music that people can listen to & be like "oh ok, this song's something I'd like to listen whenever" or "this relates to me" within a week the opinion will change. The execution is not effortless like it was

:comeon:but that's solely your opinion and not a factual statement. Your statement is grounded in YOUR perception of his music. How are you going to say that a track wasn't "the correct theme" for the MMLP "series"? Who are you to make such an objective statement about another artist's work? Constructive criticism is one thing but to criticize based on a personal and subjective standard is literally r-----ed.

You said "When I say substance, I'm talking about songs that have meaning to you":lawd: Do you understand what your own statement is saying? Virtually any one of his songs can have substance depending on who is listening which is the beauty of the artistic experience. We all relate to different things because we all have different perspectives. s---, I thought when he performed "Not Afraid" at the vmas, it was one of his greatest moments. It was triumphant, the live instruments and the drummers added to the whole effect. But I am positive there are people out there who dismissed it as some other pop s---.

People need to chill, making all these broad statements of Eminem's music and his entire discography because they are confusing their own subjective preferences with actual constructive criticism.

must i prefer one over the other

can't i appreciate one's theatrical value and another's (equally important) technical value?

i believe that the thought and energy that goes into each eminem lp warrants a status that should be elevated above "this one is 'better', no that one is 'better'"

But you really like Yellow Brick Road more than Say Goodbye to Hollywood, @csw621 ? His flow on SGTH is godly and he's more aggressive on the beat. The hook is nice too. The YBR is nice, but his flow feels a little lazy on it.

Now I see why Eminem gets bashed for everything he puts out.

There is no middle ground for Eminem in your eyes. He's either the GOAT (SSLP, MMLP, TES, 8Mile?) or trash (Encore, Relapse) . He can't rap just for the h--- of it (BME, Shady XV).

Based on this thread.. No one even talked about those songs I've mentioned and showed why they "s---". All I've seen was empty opinions with no proof to back those statements.

So with that data.. lets test something out. I'll compare some of his new-era songs to his GOAT songs. Then you tell me if you agree with me or not. Note: Comparing will be judged on theme / flows / lyrics. Answer with a simple "Agree" or "Disagree" and explain why.

    1) Almost Famous, Soldier, Above The Law (Verse), Till I Collapse. Same boat?

    2) Careful What You Wish For, Beautiful, Deja Vu, Going Through Changes, Say Goodbye Hollywood, Mockingbird, When I'm Gone. Same boat?
