Both are alien invasions: One from a global perspective, the other insular.
One is a popcorn movie without shame. The other takes itself too seriously.

Yes. Not to be confused with War of the Worlds (2005), where it was bacteria.

Signs. I prefer the atmosphere of isolation rather than a global disaster, I'm usually bored with global disaster movies

I thought the premise to Signs was stupid. Why would they invade Earth if they knew water could k--- them? Be like me jumping in a volcano and being surprised when I suddenly start dying. And don't we have enough water in the air to do something? Not much of an alien invasion when a humid day can wipe out a battalion huh?

Maybe they were desperate? No more suitable planets in sight? Dying civilization?

This scene scared the crap out of me when I was younger:

There are moments in Signs that are effective like the above scene, but it ultimately just falls apart. I'll take the cheesy excess of Independence Day.

I feel like nostalgia is taking over.

Signs is pretty hilarious by accident and also has salvageable moments.

There is no better alien movie than Independence Day. 60% on RT is ridiculous! Signs is a good film though.

Independence Day only survives because of how gloriously cheesy it is. It gets dangerously close to being a flat-out terrible movie.

Signs on the other hand is actually 70% of a great movie. Granted that other 30% is terrible, but I still think there's enough good there to make it worth watching. It's the last good thing Shyamalan made.
