Not sure if this is a hot take or not, but I’ll say it anyway. 90% of the time I find that “experimental music” is just low effort garbage with snobby fans that constantly say, “you just don’t get it man!!!”

Count Me Out is one of Kendrick Lamar’s best songs. Crown and Auntie Diaries are some of his most important and beautiful songs.

I agree with you on the massively overrated part. I heard someone call him the greatest musician of all time the other day and it blew my f---ing mind that someone thinks that lmao

The first example that comes to mind is Joji’s earlier music. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with it, but I’ve seen a lot of Joji fans get elitist about his Chloe Burbank tape and In Tongues EP early in his career. They act like these projects are legendary and his more mainstream sound now is so much worse. The sound back then was unorthodox for sure, and I do admittedly like some of it because I’m a huge Joji fan, but holy s--- a lot of it is just low effort garbage with instrumentals that are unpleasant to the ears and a monotone singing voice. I like lofi music, but it was TOO low effort, even for lofi music. He has improved drastically today, especially with his singing voice but it gets shat on by some of these fans because it’s “pop” and not “experimental” in the way they want it to be. I’ve also just been sent a lot of music that was called experimental that was just bad, and I never bothered to remember any of the names.

I should specify that my main issue isn’t experimental music itself, but I guess more so when fans try to label it experimental to feel special. For example, I’d consider Death Grips experimental music, and I think it’s pretty cool and I like it although I’m not super into it or listen to it often. I’ve seen many Death Grips/Anthony Fantano fans be snobby as f--- and think they’re special because they’re listening to something “experimental” or “underground” which really annoys me. Of course, “experimental” can be a subjective thing. I should’ve specified all of this in my original post.

In the case of the Joji thing, a lot of it could also just be people having a bias towards the older music. It always baffles me how people have such biases towards an artist’s older music… it happens so often, but I guess that’s a topic for another day.

I don’t think he’s one of the worst rappers of all time, but I do think he is overrated as f--- especially by emo white girls. I had an ex who loved him.

I agree with the general sentiment that new/experimental doesn't automatically mean good, just as an artist sticking to their guns doesn't necessarily mean bad. You can have failed experiments and you can have albums that don't switch up the formula but are still great. But...
...I don't agree with this at all. The assumption that people are pretending to like music that you consider to be bad just because it's different is kinda the same as snobby people assuming you just "don't get" music they consider to be good.

And sometimes you truly might not "get" something at first and there's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes it takes awhile for something to "click," it's happened many times with me and honestly I find it really rewarding when you dislike an artist or album but come around to it upon repeat listens. I didn't "get" Future at all when I first listened to him, but when I tried Monster again on a whim and it for some reason clicked with me that time it was amazing.

I never assumed people are “pretending” to like the music. There are groups of people on the internet (like Anthony Fantano Stans) who have a bias toward experimental music and underground music or anything labeled as such and who dismiss anything that’s simpler. These people get a sense of superiority from that. I’ve literally met people like this in real life too. I’m not saying these people are pretending to like the music in order to get that feeling. They DO like the music, and they think they’re better than others because of that.

I fully understand that certain music has to grow on you or click with you. I go through that all the time. The fact of the matter is certain things will never click with certain people, yet fans of certain artists (Playboi Carti for example) bully others because those other people don’t “get” it. The problem is when fans use that as a mechanism to cope with the fact that not everyone is going to like their favorite artist’s music or that their favorite artist put out garbage. It’s like when Eminem tries to say people didn’t like Revival because they didn’t get it… no, it was just a s-----y album to the vast majority of people.

I don't fully agree with Ripper either but I do understand what he means. Sometimes artist have to grow on you, sure. I mean ffs I hated Lil Wayne at first lmao.

But I think its very condescending that when you don't like an artist people be like 'ahh you don't get it!!' Like, get what? Kendrick fans -some- are a good example of that. Me saying I think to p---- a butterlyfly or that transgender song on his last album s---, and people responding with 'you just don't get it man'. f--- off lol

But my main point is that artist that can do something unique, or are versatille, doesn't excuse them from getting criticized.

You and I talked about this before but I meant like Playboy Carti. He does something unique and I see many people use that argument to defend him. I think he sounds absolutely terrible. Not to attack him, I just do.
Another example I like Thug, a lot of his music, but Harambe is one of the worst songs I ever heard. No matter how unique it is :kanye3:

Same as with tech nine, he can rap fast. Wow very cool but what good does it do if it mostly sounds s-----y? To me at least.
