Imagine how strong your will must be to not contact with your family for so many years. On the premise that, they hurt her in some way and the escape seemed for her to be the only solution, I still don't believe she didn't want to know what is going on in her family's life.

It must be some mental disease. I'm very curious what really happened to this woman.

I think it would have been a lot easier back then to do it than now. But still it's a huge thing to do. You've literally gotta cut off all ties to loved ones and friends. I wanna know WHY she did it.

Petra Pazsitka, a computer science student in Braunschweig, Germany, hit the headlines after she mysteriously vanished in 1984.

The then 24-year-old was reported missing after she failed to show up for her brother's birthday party.

Miss Pazsitka's disappearance sparked a manhunt, with police even turning to popular TV programme Aktenzeichen XY - which is similar to Crimewatch - for help finding

The appeal led officers to a man suspected of raping and killing a 14-year-old local girl.

He confessed to killing Miss Pazsitka, but later withdrew his statement.

Despite the widespread search, her body was never found and she was declared dead in 1989.

But a staggering 31 years on she has been found living in the western city of Dusseldorf, with no official documentation and under the name of 'Mrs Schneider'.

Now aged 55, her identity came to light when she called police to report a burglary at her home.

When officers asked her name she initially told them it was 'Mrs Schneider' - however she confessed her true identity when officers later asked for identification.

Her brother and mother were in shock and tears when they heard the news

Joachim Grande, of Braunschweig Police, said Miss Pazsitka revealed she had been living in several German cities since she was reported missing, without telling any of her loved ones she was still alive.

He said: "She did not have a bank account and paid all her bills cash.

"Her brother and mother were in shock and tears when they heard the news."

Miss Pazsitka - who has told police she does not want to contact her living family - has reportedly been earning a small income through illicit work.

A spokesman for Braunschweig Police said: "As to the motive of her disappearance, she gave no explanation, and expressly said that she continues to want no contact with the public or her family."

Prosecutors do not feel she has committed a criminal offence but she must now officially register with German authorities as alive.
