TPAB is a good even great album. One of my personal favorites of the year. Got a lot of play time from me. However, it falls a few points short of the hip hop classic that is GKMC.

Still, you can't ignore the acclaim it's received this past year.

Correct but they shouldn't be compared at all. GKMC is a classic but TPAB is an even more impressive classic, not only the album is better, it also influenced much better artists to drop music (CHuck D, Prince, David Bowie).

I was talkign about it with a few experts and they came to the conclusion that the constant TPAB/GKMC comparison will have a very negative impact on gkmc. They're saying comparing two albums always lead to the same bs: one is getting praised, the other gets more hate... and since tpab is objectively better and more acclaimed...

but like someone said earlier, kendrick dropped them 2 albums for different people, but it doesn't change the fact that tpab seems to be, for a lot of obvious reasons, an overall better album. At least thats what it looks like when you put personal bias and nostalgia aside.

I can't be mad at this. I found myself revisiting TPAB more and more than gkmc, it is still a great album but to p---- is just more defined, musically.

Good point. My favorite kendrick project is still O.D. but I'd say this:

Tpab is his best and or most complete album
GKMC is his more accessible project
S80 is his best lyrical effort, but kendrick was just not mature enough at that time

GKMC is more likely to be his "all eyez on me", that's what the general public will know from him, TPAB will be the album that will be mentioned by heads and fans of music as his masterpiece, section 80 is gonna be the underground fans favourite.

TPAB is too bloated, lays it on too thick (a problem with all 3 of his albums), and kendricks rapping, ironically, really feels soulless on a lot of the cuts. It forces it's emotional arcs rather than letting them surface naturally, it shows its hand too often, and is really just filled with the worst qualities of kendricks writing more often than not.

I still like it, and think it's a good album, but its not one of the best of the year and is definitely not better than gkmc

Im a fan of Kendrick. Honestly I still prefer GKMC to it. I do think that TPAB getting AOTY is well deserved tho, its a great album 10/10 in my eyes and the only flaw I can think of is that sometimes the album just feels a little stale to me. GKMC just had a really good balance of bright and dark sounds. When I think of TPAB I feel like the balance is a little bit tilted to a specific sound. Kendrick just had a more memorable delivery in GKMC as well.
