Dec 9, 2015They're not subject to the same regulations/overhead as taxi drivers, and in a lot of cities, they're operating illegally. Beyond that, the lack of overhead is allowing them to charge substantially less than taxis, which has lead to unfair competition.

Taxi industry makes more money by bleeding the drivers to pay for their medallions. Shouldn't need it in the first place. If your friend picks you up to go out in his car is it illegal??Ordinary Joel, Enigma, what and 1 other person like this. -

The competition is fair. Taxi drivers are the woat and way overpriced. They've just been running an over priced monopoly and finally have some competition. In NYC if you want to go from Manhattan to another borough depending on the time or day they'll pull up and say no and bounce. Uber is awesome. I use it all the time now. I used to go to a local bar at my old spot and pay $25-$30 to go 5 miles home if I was drunk. With uber I was paying under $10 and that was including the tip
Where do you guys see there's no background check. Or is that in Canada? Here they do a 6 or 7 year driving and criminal background checkOrdinary Joel, Enigma, what and 1 other person like this. -

All it takes to become an uber driver is watching a 13 minute YouTube video and clicking accept, you can have a criminal record and even multiple DUIs there's literally no background checks. In most cities it's actually difficult to become a taxi driver because they put an artificial scarcity on the taxi licenses. Taxi drivers barely scrape by, and uber drivers are lowering the profits even more by taking all the business and of often times ending up with less than minimum wages because of ubers profit cut, whichethey're allowed to do since technically they're not a taxi business and are instead an app to connect drivers and customers. Uber is basically destroying an entire industry and everyone's livelihood who's involvedOrdinary Joel, DeletedAccount, Chad Warden and 1 other person like this. -

A lot of people say that taxi drivers just need to switch to uber then, but they have so much invested as far as licenses and plates go (which can cost upwards of 200k in some cities, more in cities like Toronto), that switching isn't an option.
Regulation needs to be put on Uber, or it needs to be reduced on taxis. Uber is the better service, no doubt, but they're not operating on an even playing field.Ordinary Joel, Chad Warden and CODEiNE DEMON like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -
