This whole "meme" discussion has me laughing though, the way it's being framed as a bad thing. Hotline Bling the song was not made to be a meme. The video turned out to be, and even if we give Director X the benefit of the doubt and assume that was his intention with it, who cares? By supplementing the song with that video, you launched it from a slow and steady climb straight to the number 2 spot behind Adele. Wasn't that the point of the music video? So by identifying the way in which media is consumed in 2015, and catering to that to further your brand is a bad thing?
Are you kidding me?
Drake's music is great, but that alone isn't why he is far and away the biggest rap star of his generation. He understands his market and how to exploit it. He came up in the blog era of 2009, during which the release of music shifted from calculated label releases to a "direct to consumer" format. Drake absolutely learned, adapted to, and exploited this shift and created a sense of intimacy between him and his fans. And then when social media shifted to formats which required a shorter attention span, he absolutely did what he could to exploit this shift as well - from the "how's my mixtape" hat, to the "slideshow ether", to the "hotline bling photo booth". But that's a bad thing?
Are you kidding me?
No matter how you market s---, it's still s---. Lucky for Drake, his music is anything but that. Is his music as deep as these girls on tumblr make it out to be? Absolutely not. Is his music still great? Absolutely, yes. Go make some memes of some of the struggle s--- you n----s post in the Creative SXN, see how that pans out for you. Drake's popularity or marketing strategies have no bearing on the level of enjoyment I derive from his music. No matter how many memes are created, both Take Care and Nothing Was The Same are more than likely still going to be very enjoyable listens for me a year from now.

man, what? i just said on this page: lots of critics are hypebeasts. i said that. i agree with you. you're not proving a point. you're masturbating. the critics who only write about things when they're hot are terrible at their job and doing a disservice to everyone. that's what i'm saying. you think i disagree with you because you can't read anyone else's post over the sound of you being impressed with yourself.Ordinary Joel, Mikey and Flacko like this. -

So... Critics don't talk about them therefore they don't like them? I'd imagine a typical critic functions similar to a human being, so following that train of thought (sorry if that's "reaching" still) then they'd still love migos as much as they did, but just not talk about them. That makes them still critical darlings because every critic loves them. You offered up the counterpoint that they're not talked about by critics as if that's the measure of gauging how much critics like something, so I called that behavior out as being hypebeast. Either train of thought is cringe inducing I'm just following those mentalities to their logical endpoints and calling it what it is.Enigma, Flacko and Chad Warden like this.
