May 1, 2016 he finessed the arrangement of the summer portion so well. with you and too good being the openers and closers both have a light island vibe, with controlla and one dance going balls to the wall with it (and being placed exactly in the middle back to back). and then everything in between capture pretty much every other mood for our summers. still here and childs play >>>> this album only getting better for me each day.
May 1, 2016 still here reminds me of we'll be fine off of TC somewhat. child's play had potential but the writing seems a little lazy to me. honestly though, i absolutely f---ing love Too Good.
May 1, 2016 Worried? Why? If you're a Drake fan at this point you have to accept that you're unable to know if his lyrics were written by him or not. It's up to you whether or not you want to make a value judgment based on that, and whether you'll let that affect your enjoyment of his work. But there's no uncertainty here: the guy uses writers extensively.
May 1, 2016 Smh half the bangers on IYRT were hardly written by the boy. He's a good writer too, dunno why he so lazy with that tape.
May 1, 2016 I'm on mobile right now but listen to RIP (Rita Ora) and Fall For Your Type (Jamie Foxx). I'll find more for you when I'm at the crib but those two I remember off the top.
May 1, 2016 Good looks. I figured he had written for some people since Wayne's verse on Ransom, but never got around to research it.
May 1, 2016 An intelligent discussion would be acknowledging that reference tracks don't mean a thing. There's nothing wrong with using reference tracks. Drake can write the bars, but if he needs or wants help with the flow, cadence or anything he can have a reference track made for him. Reference tracks are often used to figure out the best way to perform a song. Reference tracks do not prove that Drake doesn't write his own songs. Let's also acknowledge the fact that Drake has written for several other artists.
May 1, 2016 Can someone link me to these reference tracks? Haven't heard 'em. Our boy Makonnen smart as f--- for getting out early.
May 1, 2016 Look: this isn't a binary thing. At one point, Drake wrote for a couple of high-profile artists. (The ones we have confirmation on are not rappers, though some people speculate he briefly wrote for Wayne.) We also have evidence that he has people writing for him now--and that sometimes the credits don't exactly line up with reality, but that's another situation. Jay wrote for other people back in the day, but Kendrick helped write on Blueprint 3. But to address the first point in the post I quoted: You have to jump through a lot of intellectual hoops to believe that Drake is writing things from scratch, sending them to artists that he signed, and asking them to turn around performance references. Those exist, but it takes a huge leap of faith to say that that's what's happening here. (Furthermore, how is that better?)
May 1, 2016 Here's the reality, he's a pop star who is the face of a successful machine and will very likely do anything to keep the machine greased. 1) There are various values (authenticity, talent, DIY ethics) within Hip-Hop that frown up this. 2) The image he has sold is contradicted. It feels disingenuous. If you bought into it, his product is likely tainted. How can you be the greatest if you didn't write your own s---? 3) Whatever you think about 1 or 2. there is also apparent shady business at play which is fueling the controversy. I don't care that he doesn't write his own s---. At least, it doesn't stop my from liking or not liking his music. He's just like most pop stars except his genre isn't pop, it's hip-hop. I do care that OVO & him are shady with the money which I assume is pretty common in the industry but d--- show some love. People starving out here & you making millions.
May 1, 2016 Y'all discrediting IYRT like it didn't have significance in his career is hilarious. What if PND is the leak of all the references and everyone thinking it was QM? Also, what did Drake say on 0 to 100? "f--- all that rap-to-pay-your-bills s--- I'm on some rappers-pay-my-bills s---" He wasn't lying.
May 3, 2016 Drake was a ghostwriter at one point, I think after the fame got him doing too much his pen game became something of a "if I have time to do it" kind of deal
