Today is the 20th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt's release. (I wrote about it http://blog.vinylmeplease.com/jay-z...hy-its-the-best-album-in-a-masterful-catalog/)

Jay is not only one of the greatest rappers to ever live, but also--obviously--one of the most famous. People have strong opinions about his music, not because it's divisive, but because he occupies such an important space in rap and in pop culture writ large.

I've been having a lot of conversations about Jay lately (maybe because I'm writing a book about one of his records) and it's becoming increasingly clear to me that most listeners, at least those born in the late 80s or later, are only actually familiar with a portion of his discography.

We focus on his album-oriented periods (including, sadly, his post-retirement career) much more than we focus on the period when he was actually rapping the best.

So with that in mind, I think it might be fun and productive to go through his albums one-by-one and have mini listening sessions. I know @Koolo's are always great and I think this would be too.

Could obviously do Reasonable Doubt today, seeing as it's the anniversary. Who's in?

@WPG did you have a certain time you wanted to do this? I'm on the east coast so an ideal time for me would be around 7 pm est

Edit: either that or I could just get a Playlist together and we would all start listening to it at the same time

As far as time goes, I'm traveling for an article and am basically unavailable from 7 p.m. EST until midnight. So earlier the better for me.

If that doesn't end up working you guys can always go ahead without me on this one. It's a masterpiece, and I can just add thoughts from the airport etc. More important I'm here for the less-heard ones.

    Featured.

Might not be able to make it to the listening session depending on what time it is, but I'm certainly game to listen to his discog album by album and post my thoughts.

I was actually just thinking the other day about how he has a number of pretty good records I rarely listen to because I always end up going back to RD/AG/BP/TBA. Vol. 1/2 need more love especially, though I'm curious to see how they hold up because it's probably been years since I've listened to them.

Yeah, considering those two albums are better than any two Jay albums I'd say it's fair....and I love Jay

Yeah I mean, Big is probably the only person living or dead who mastered every single aspect of rapping as form/art/performance, and he did it all before he turned 25. He's the greatest ever.

there's no denying biggies legacy but we never got to see him fall off
with jay we have gotten a few questionable albums among genre defining albums

Definitely in, time difference might be an issue if it's early though

I'm cool with it being at 7 est like Soldier suggested
