Need some help from you techs. I had a friend build me a desktop back in 2010. He installed Windows 7 ultimate in it for me. Pirated version ofc, now I have this message on my desktop that says this version of windows is not genuine but it still works fine. My question is can I upgrade to Windows 10 through the download option I keep getting from Microsoft? Will my PC be f----- if I do because it can tell I have a pirated OS? Will it give me an option to purchase a windows 10 activation key if I upgrade? I have no problem buying a legit copy. I'm just worried about my desktop going to s--- if I download it.

What you should do is download a patch to make the current version genuine, then do the upgrade. That's what I did when I first upgraded, at launch. You don't have to worry about purchasing it, because Win 10 is a free upgrade until July 29th.

Don't upgrade with a pirated version. It may lock your motherboard and have your computer go into an infinite looping boot stage.

I've heard that Microsoft offers free upgrade for pirated version as well, after upgrade it will ask you to buy the key. Not confirmed by me, but I think you should be fine

I don't mind paying. I would've bought a legit windows 7 copy but my friend just went ahead and installed it for me when he built my pc and I was just like ok cool. Shouldve just cleaned it and bought a legit copy.

When I built my new PC my buddy hooked me up with W10 on a USB and he included a program I could run whenever my windows ran out of activation (I get a watermark on my screen) and it fixes it for me.

Nice. I know I can look up and find a way to permanently activate it but at this point I might just buy a legit key. I've been pirating s--- for so long I may try buying something for once.
