He does put out some lazy stuff, but his beats tend to suit Future and Thug very well and they make great use of them. That's the purpose of a beat imo. They're supposed to support the artist, not steal the show.
Imagine Young Thug over Pete Rock or something. That fits your criteria and yet it would be unquestionably awful. I don't think Metro is incapable of making interesting beats. I just think a lot of producers, even guys like DJ Premier, find a formula and start abusing the h--- out of it.
Not to forget that hip-hop production in most instances is kind of defined by the repetitiveness and rigid structure. It's the baseline for the rapper to embellish over. Hard to be angry at the other three guys in the jazz quartet for getting a bit predictable so the sax solo guy has a foundation to build on. At least that's the mind set that I approach it with.
If you want off the wall experimentation, that's where instrumental work that doesn't have to be considerate of the rapper comes in. Danny Brown even took that type of stuff and still managed to rap over it on his latest album. That album was definitely trap flavored.

but 99% of trap production sounds like the same boring s--- i've heard about 100 other producers make and every generic comeup on soundcloud is making it too

For example: kanye. Every beat on all of his albums sound different than the others. Same goes for Jay, Nas, (emimem), and a few others. I like Gucci/Thug/Fewtch a LOT but I just love when albums have a variety of beats instead of the same (or similar) beats.
For example thuggers 'Pacifier', Future's 'Fly s--- Only' or Gucci riding the Cold Water beat or 'Champions' it gets my hyped af for them rapping over other stuff.
Metro nice, I like his beats but I like more how he pretty much become a brand and gained so much popularity. That s--- is hard to do as a producer, not many producers out here getting shoe deals
Other producers like london, wheezy, vinylz and even sonny ahead of him tho (when it comes to producing)
