So I'm kinda trying to have a thread for all of the great filmmakers we all know and love/want to learn more about.

    5. Thief

I'm not quite the Michael Mann devotee that many film buffs are and my taste in Mann films skews kinda pleb. With that said, I do pretty much like all of his work.

    1. Collateral
    2. The Insider
    3. Miami Vice
    4. Manhunter
    5. Blackhat
    6. Ali
    7. The Last of the Mohicans
    8. Heat
    9. Thief
    10. Public Enemies (sorry @Vahn )

One of the audiovisual pioneers. Pretty much all of his movies are about hyper masculine men fighting the tides of their professional life to reach an end game that they all subconsciously know they'll never reach. Manhunter/Vice/Collateral end up on the more positive end of the spectrum, with Heat/Public Enemies/Thief/Blackhat all but abandoing hope for their subjects. You could almost call Blackhat a more refined, digital rendition of Thief's formula, the main difference being Caan's unhinged ambition versus Hemsworth never losing control mentally or physically. The parallels from that set of films is insane, Mann growing visibly more detached from the original idea of materialist ambition in his characters to more grounded, philosophical concerns starting with Heat. Caan boasting about his money and crimes to impress his girl or Will's ego in Manhunter are far crys from where he' gone since. Tony Scott is probably the only other action filmmaker who has tried to delve so deep into that psyche, maturing in each film that explores it. So real, entertaining, and inspiring to watch. Few things get me more hype than watching Mann characters, so f---ing cool.

    1.) Miami Vice
    2.) Ali
    3.) Blackhat
    4.) Public Enemies
    5.) Manhunter
    6.) Collateral
    7.) Thief
    8.) Heat
    9.) The Insider
10.) The Last of the Mohicans
    11.) The Keep

NEED THE KEEP IN HD, THAT TANGERINE DREAM SCORE HAS SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL

Da cool thing about Michael Mann is that literally all his films minus The Keep are classics so the lists differ so greatly.

Blackhat is a masterpiece tho, another top 15 American film oat. :rejoice:

Miami Vice rly underwhelmed me initially. I've since come to appreciate it more.

But yeah. I'll only accept Johnny Depp as a gangster if he's with Pacino. Sry Mann, Sry Whitey Bulger

    lol never change vahn
