Ordinary Joel Found a new way to flow

I like it. Some good paralleling of the old music (disco) and the new craze of the time (DJing/Hip-Hop). Acting/main story a bit, cheesy/over polished I guess? But that's expected with most of Baz Luhrmann's projects.

Soundtrack is really good. Jaden Smith doing Jaden Smith things. It's a pretty fun show most of the time.

Shows okay overall. Its cheesy and over the top at times, but they did pay homage to a lot of the legendary figures in early Hip Hop like Flash, Kool Herc, Crash One, Afrika Bambaataa (I wonder if therea going to be a Bambaataa portrayal considering the child abuse accusations hes had to deal with recently). I liked Zeke's speech in the finale when he referenced all of those old school graff writers. I think if you're into the history of Hip Hop and you like Old School Hip Hop, its worth Checking out. I would also recommend checking out Style Wars, Wild Style and Beat Street. The shows trying to get into that company of historic Hip Hop films.

The gay graff writer trope is a bit tired though.

This sums up my The Get Down experience as well.

Not Netflix's best show, and they certainly could've allocated their money better, but I've really enjoyed watching and I'm invested in all the characters. Looking forward to part 2.

Also, I think I'm in love with Mylene

That's Baz Luhrmann's projects though. It's enjoyable for what it is.

The archival footage they use of NYC is awesome. It is incredibly alien versus the modern NYC I've explored. Plus, the characterizations of Kool Herc & Grandmaster Flash and seeing them spin is cool. Love the kung fu influences they incorporated which is part of the "corniness" perceived.

i was intrigued by some parts of the pilot, but found it kind of corny and a slog. too much going on, some cartoony subplots.

should i keep going? the core premise is rly compelling...

I found it a lot easier to watch after that long pilot episode. I much prefer the hip-hop side of the story compared to the disco/singer story.

lmao @ the black dynamite comparison

i didn't really critique the show too seriously when watching. made for a nice binge watch and watching Mylene 11/10 fine a--- makes for a very comfortable watch. the whole first half of the series makes for a great set up for the last half IMO

acting was pretty on point for mylene though as well as Shameik and Ezekiel. the brothers were kinda hit or miss and jaden could still be a better actor but for me, someone who isn't from new york, i'll say i learned plenty
