right, so your arguments about it are always going to be reductive and miss the point. just talk about the work as a whole. it's impossible to break it into component parts

I didn't say you couldn't break it into components, I just said you can't define it. You can't bring definition of a certain category into this

But you can, and it's been done before

Also "I'm right". No, your opinion isn't a fact

how can you actually separate "lyricism" from "technique" from "subject matter" from message"? they're not only parts of a whole, but they're parts that interact differently with one another based on the artist's intentions.

If you can define them as distinguished parts then you've already separated them.

How they work together is yet another aspect, but that cohesion between these parts can count as another feature on it's own.

Of course being objective about this is still hard because you can't qualitatively analyse subjective opinions.

naming components is not the same as isolating them in a finished work of art. art isn't math.

Well yeah but you grade the work based on the strength of the components anyways.

    "This song sounds good"
    Ok why?
"The flow is good, his voice is solid, the wordplay is top notch, but the content is lacking. "

The problem between comparing works of art is setting qualitative standards. But then again you can't judge all works of art by the same standard. And such standards will never be truly objective. They can at best be consensual.

It's why i tell people that it's unfair trying to compare Eminem with young thug. It's like trying to compare Micheal Jackson to linkin park. You don't (or shouldn't) look for the same things in the same proportions from them.

Lol what? How is that important?
Not sure why you felt the need to remind people that you aren't a virgin.

Jay Z clearly had the more successful career. But, Illmatic is the GOAT rap album and is 100x better than Jay'z best album. Also, Nas is more respectable.

Too different to compare, although I prefer Nas to Jay (both top 5)

Jay bit Biggie a lot listen to how rapped really fast with no melody trying to fit the most syllables into a 16, flow be d---ed (kinda like Talib) then suddenly went for a more measured flow after meeting Biggie

Hang on, you've started a thread about arguing something incorrectly yet you don't follow you own advice and out things like actual examples and references??
