if leo doesnt win the oscar this time, he will never get one.

Dude deserves at least 3 for his AWESOMEEEEEEEEEE performances over the last years.

Leo has a good shot at the Oscar. No stiff competition this year.

Exactly. Very reminiscent of The New World. Not as provocative unfortunately.

Watching the screener made me remember that good cinematography existed before HD :')

This goes back to you (charlie and CA too) not putting the same stock into the experience as I do. A work that manages to express its ideas through visual means is just as, if not more impressive to me than films that express their ideas more conventionally. It's certainly predictable, and there's not much to the story or its characters, but that doesn't matter. It's a portrait of a setting, its inhabitants, the brutality they face from the geographical/social nature of those things, and the eventual physical and spiritual resurrection that one has to go through to combat their deprivations. Leo's transformation over the course of the film is just insane, and to say so much about nature, family, man, etc with the characters speaking so little is a pretty major achievement.

Need to revisit The New World. Was my least favorite from Malick when I ran through his filmography last year.

Yeah for sure, I loved the movie. It was gripping basically from start to finish. I just wish there was more to make the average viewer invested. im not even an "average" viewer myself, i have experience with films of this nature. but even then, i didn't find myself as invested as i hoped id be.

I gave it a 3.5. Didn't exactly pan it bb. Kind of lazy to write off people who don't love it as "not getting it". I find it kind of perplexing that you're saying this film was dense. The story itself is dead simple and the tangents that it goes on about the plight of the Indian and the holiness of nature weren't very captivating. "Look, this Indian helps Leo! Better than white people!! Then he dies from evil white people :emoji_slight_frown:" or white people literally raping the Indian girl. Sure, it's using visual language to do this but it's mostly relying on exclamatory sentences instead of poetry. That's where Malick excels to his own detriment in The New World.

Not doing that! You can "get it" without loving the film perfectly fine.

I admitted that there isn't much to the story. My defense is that its technical qualities are what is meant to give the viewer the scene-to-scene intrigue that the story doesn't have. I was captivated from the first frame to the last.

Indians got f----- up by white people back then. The scenes you're describing were more about Inarritu showing what some of them had to deal with than they were trying to make a collective statement about race.

There's nothing wrong with that. The Revenant isn't trying to be The New World.

I don't blame you bruh, i wont watch it again. Hateful Eight is also slow and it gets kinda boring, they're making these movies a lil too long imo H8ful 8 does pick up in the last hour though.

The Revenant is a flawed film. A.G. Inarritu riding high off the success of Birdman hit a stumbling block with this one.
Technically and visually this film blows everything out of the water. But it suffers from a poor script and pacing, also Hardy's accent is off, the British accent seeps through way too much.
Dicaprio's weakest film since The Beach in my opinion.
Film reminds me of Brad Pitt's Jesse James, a film which is great to look at but it's hard to sit through because of the pacing.
    I'd rate the film 6.9/10

Also can Lubezki make it a 3 peat?

Couldn't agree more, too many slow/boring moments with this movie. They should have cut the time down too.
