His singles defined a generation's formative years no different than how Wayne's did for the generation prior. You know Best I Ever Had and Find Your Love are popping up at wedding receptions and s--- now. It's nearly impossible to gatekeep what classic means when it comes popular music. Try saying Michael Jackson and The Beatles didn't have hits without coming off like a contrarian. Drake is that level of iconic.

You can't talk about 2008-2012 without talking about all of those Drake singles. The Wayne collabs alone were inescapable and really the last flash of Wayne's best days that Drake brought out of him: Right Above It, HYFR, The Motto, Miss Me. Then you have his solo s--- like Headlines and Marvin's Room and the couple I lead off with. Then there's those couple of hits with Khaled like No New Friends and I'm On One. His catalog of hits is extensive to say the least.

On a personal level, I still return to Underground Kings and June 17 regularly and I can't even finish the projects Drake was putting out back then. The guy has an undeniable knack for singles. You can dispel a lot of myths about Drake's supposed status, but I don't think that's one of them.

It was a pretty normal conversation. Maybe don't be a tryhard with quips all day and you'll get one for yourself.

Keep it up, Z. We all think you're a very cool person.

    first of all, these––

––like his undeniable songs from recent years ("one dance," "controlla," "hotline bling," "hold on we're going home") are...not really rap songs. this is partially my point.

drake's music is incredibly popular in the moment. no doubt about it. is "i'm on one" a classic rap song, though? when that beat comes on, are rappers trying to jump on it? do drake's lyrics from it make their way into conversation, or get interpolated/alluded to by other artists? does he have a "grindin," a "g thang"––a "real slim shady"? i'm not sure. phrases like "no new friends" make it through, sure. does anyone really care about that song, even a few years removed? that was 2013; a classic rap song from 2013 is "type of way." drake, as famous as he is for being a rapper, doesn't really have the catalog of rap songs you would imagine he does.

Type of Way meets none of these standards.

    YOLO.

Every lyric Drake has ever said has captioned a thousand Instagram posts. I'd bet that his lyrics are tattooed on more people's bodies than the amount of people who bought RHQ's last album lol.

Either you're severely out of touch with the average listener or are desperately overrating the media class's role in dictating what's what. Drake has the most billboard success of any rapper ever. He did that on the strength of his singles.

i would refer you to your own reasoning:
but in all seriousness........i don't think you understand the argument i'm making, otherwise you wouldn't be telling me about how often drake charts. i know drake charts constantly. i know he always has songs on the radio. i'm saying his rap songs tend to not endure the way most truly classic rap songs, even those from this decade, do. obviously this is not an argument that can be won empirically.

i do think it's sort of dumb that you theorize i'm overestimating the role of media or whatever––find me a bloc of rap listeners more obsessed with drake than those in music media. they're his biggest boosters.
