In terms of songwriting I would say ems best song is Sing For The Moment, but once again he didn't write that hook

This. It's about rapping. The title of the thread makes it clear.

i think you put together a very respectable list.

for the most part, rappers' have very different styles. jay-z is nothing like wu-tang. kanye west is nothing like eminem. and i could name countless more examples. so IMO, its very difficult to make arguments for who's better than who.

but this list definitely captures some of the best to ever do it

What makes the songwriting on Kim terrible?

Songwriting is to rap what complex lyricism is to genres such as pop. You can certainly find it within the genre, but it's not the most common thing artists excel at.

Again, I would still argue those songs. Maybe not Cleaning Out My Closet and Kim, but definitely the other ones. I would say Guilty Conscience more than the rest

yeah gc also is really dope conceptually but thats a few picks out of his endless catalog of songs, you can't name 10 kanye songs that don't have fantastic songwriting you know, and thats because he can't rely on his rap skills for better or worse

The struggle to name several Eminem songs that display great songwriting in order to compare him to an acknowledged great songwriter like Kanye shows how pointless this debate is.

Eminem doesn't have the songwriting ability that Kanye has, but Eminem definitely has songs with great songwriting

What sucks about making those lists is that each artist has a different goal when rapping. Like, if you say Eminem is the best because he is the best at rhyming. He obviously focuses more on rhyming than most other rappers do. You could say BIG is the best because he has the best flow (I don't agree with this, but let's go), but perhaps you're comparing him to rappers who don't care for flow as much as BIG did. The only fair approach is to have all rappers focus on doing the same thing, then seeing who did it better. But you're never going to come across that scenario. There'll never be a consensus on a top 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 or whatever.

He does, but what I'm trying to say is that Kanye just displays a lot more songwriting skills and that's something we all know so the debate is pointless.

This is why I base my list off of a mix of rapping skill and discography

And when I say rapping skill I mean a mix of Flow, Lyrics, Storytelling, Rhyming, Metaphors, Entendres, etc.

In the end, it's pretty subjective. The most "objective" way to do it would be to judge who showcases the most skills, but even then you can't do that accurately since there are skills some rappers don't care about, even though they can display them.
