Jun 29, 2015 So ur rating is basically the equivalent of patting kenny on the back n goin "good try buddy you'll get em next time (maybe, probably not tho)?" Hahah
Jun 29, 2015 you're taking the most reductive, dismissive reading of my comments, as usual. kendrick made his sophomore album--on a major label, as he's poised to be a huge mainstream star--a sprawling treatise on race. it's an admirable, compelling move. there's clearly a lot going on in his head. very little of that makes it through in the way it should, but you can still see the wheels turning. on top of that, there are moments of acrobatic rapping. the music is kind of the same thing. though none of it really coalesces into a serviceable whole, there are moments of great musicianship on the album. thundercat is thundercat. it's like an unreleased session from a jam band that probably wasn't good enough to be a wide release, but has some interesting bits.
Jun 29, 2015 i was jokin breh jk but yeah, this reading off the album makes more and more sense as time passes. still dont fully get where you're coming from re: production. thats one of the most impeccable aspects of the album to me. its kendrick as a rapper and what he decided to do in certain parts this time around that brings the album down for me
Jun 29, 2015 dunno where you could possibly get "impeccable." even the album's biggest proponents would probably have to concede it's very, very convoluted. and despite some impressive musicianship, the jazz, p-funk, g-funk, everything are pale imitations of their parent sounds, and even their better iterations in rap music. i fail to see how someone could listen to The Chronic, Quik is the Name, anything to ever come out of Leimert Park, etc and say "yeah, that kendrick album is a good example of these sounds in hip-hop." it's tepid.
Jun 29, 2015 yeah i definitely dont have nearly as well of a grasp as others on where the sounds of TPAB are derived from (at least not at the moment). i was just commenting on how well it seems to work in the context of the album.
Jun 29, 2015 How you rate it? 9.7/10 Where you rank it with his albums? This is his best album. Where you rank it with albums released so far this year? My AOTY, currently.
