Mar 2, 2018 Uber and Lyft drivers in the US make a median profit of $3.37 per hour before taxes, according to a new report that suggests a majority of ride-share workers make below minimum wage and that many actually lose money. Researchers did an analysis of vehicle cost data and a survey of more than 1,100 drivers for the ride-hailing companies for the published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. The report – which factored in insurance, maintenance, repairs, fuel and other costs – found that 30% of drivers are losing money on the job and that 74% earn less than the minimum wage in their states. The findings have raised fresh concerns about labor standards in the booming sharing economy as companies such as Uber and Lyft continue to face scrutiny over their treatment of drivers, who are classified as independent contractors and have few rights or protections. Mar 2, 2018 Also, does this account for people who barely drive? Use uber/lyft as their main source of income?
Mar 4, 2018 You gotta work a ton to make a decent living from driving for these companies. Most people just use this as a side gig.
Mar 4, 2018 I mean if its a job that requires no qualifications aside from something literally ever normal person can get then no Anyways, this sample has no known factors. A good way to judge it would be if they sampled drivers who actually were on the clock getting paid 40 hours a week. We dont know if the 3.37 is for someone who does maybe an hour of driving or what
Mar 4, 2018 It is a low-skill job, but a low-skill job with high-demand that's "necessary" in today's society. Why shouldn't they be paid a living wage? Why should anyone with a job not be paid a living wage for that matter?
Mar 4, 2018 :S every uber driver I have spoken to does it because they have no other source of income and they all seem pretty happy with it and how much they get paid. I even have drivers brag to me that they do long drives from brisbane - the gold coast back and forth to clock up huge payments - that specific guy was saying his worst week he made $400 but only worked 3 days. also had a fair few "can't find work, i'm in ma 30's and i got kids. ii can take em to school then at the press of a few phone buttons i'm working a job, howsthat?" he then proceeded to brag about how he's really happy he can work whatever hours he chooses and can still make a living. Maybe it's different in America, but I know it's fine here in Aus. not that i give a s--- or want to insert myself into an argument, but taxi drivers have to pay some $100K+ insurance fee, which is factored in into their fares. Uber drivers don't have to fork out any money so I think it's reasonably "fair" pay as long as you aren't looking at it as a proper job. (again this is in my country, where you guys are from they probs have to just buy 16 assault rifles instead of the $100k)
Mar 4, 2018 I had one who had an Uber fuel card - I'm certain we don't have that here. But I'm wondering if they're tallying it from literally every person who is an Uber driver's hours when a lot just do it whenever. It's hard to monitor when it's a lot more casual. Some would drive with the thing switched on all the time but just do it when they feel like it.
Mar 4, 2018 fuggn h--- c---- we'd have people lining up at uber offices for work if we had uber fuel cards but yeah that's it, most uber drivers i speak to say they just enter what location they are going and then it will match them with a customer who is travelling a similar route
Mar 4, 2018 Oh can they do that? I always thought one of the "appeals" of Uber was the fact the driver doesn't know where they're going until you're in the car - preventing the usual cabbie s--- of trying to score an airport trip at 3PM on a Tuesday in suburbia instead of just taking fares.
Mar 4, 2018 well the one "hustla" uber driver who broke it down for me said he could add like his own destination then it'll pop up with people seeking ubers near the area, going in a similar direction. SO he said what he did was he'd go near airports or around the gold coast then say he's heading towards brisbane and just hit yes to all the people lookin for an uber. he said if they weren't going far enough he could just cancel it and then another uber would be sent to them. guy said he did this on weekends and would earn shitloads
Mar 4, 2018 yeh when i got back i noticed there was an uber pick up zone which is dope for them cos its illegal for em to pick people up at the airport - i didn't think the government would let em implement a pick up zone (it was in a car park a fair way down but still)
Mar 4, 2018 idk man where I live the min wage is $15 and that's still not enough to afford an apartment in most parts of Seattle-proper. The average rent for an apt. is around 2000/mo and at that salary and rent you'd have $600 left a month. Before taxes.
