Jan 29, 2016 Article Kendrick Lamar may be one of the biggest rap stars on the planet right now, but no matter what success has come his way, he outright refuses to forget where he came from. No matter how big Lamar gets, he keeps finding ways to represent and uplift his hometown of Compton, California. The Los Angeles County municipality affectionately known as “Hub City” was one of the most important characters in Lamar’s breakthrough album good kid, m.A.A.d. city. The album focused on a day in the life of a teenaged Lamar as he navigated his notoriously dangerous hometown. Though Lamar expanded his scope with 2015’s To p---- A Butterfly, he still made time to represent Compton on tracks like “King Kunta” and its celebratory music video. But Kendrick does more than just talk about his city. He works to give back, as well. He’s donated loads of money to afterschool programs, worked on anti-g--- violence initiatives and actually visited high schools to meet with students personally. It should come as no surprise that he was recently given the key to the city. So, it makes perfect sense that when the time came to make a Grammy promo for his anthem “Alright,” he’d fill the video with his fellow Compton residents reciting the song’s words. It’s a powerful and fitting statement on where the rapper and the themes that surround most of his music were born.
