see i think thats a very narrow way of looking at it. i think creativity in general plays the biggest role. not to mention, by best "pure rapper" i dont mean just "lyricism." i see that category encompassing everything from flow and delivery to the actual writing. and, in the end, its important to place everything in context, always. you shouldnt be approach future's writing the same way you do kendrick's, even if they're about the same topic. each artist has a pre-existing narrative and their own aesthetic. its about how well as a rapper you can execute that. what some people do, however, is preemptively discredit one style relative to another, which is for the birds and they shouldnt have any place in a critical discussion about rap

Well like, if it was pure rapping ability I would give it to Kendrick?

And then what he did on the Compton album too.

But if it's best rapper, as in the guy who showed he was the most capable of crafting a 10/10 song in 2015, then I want to say Future.

But anyways it's not like I'm mad at the Young Thug pick for best rapper, I just wouldn't pick him myself. For me:
    Best Rapper: Future
    Largest Impact: Kendrick
    Most Relevant: Drake
    Should Retire: Eminem :laff:

you need to listen to more thug smh

edit: kendricks performance for the untitled track is more impressive than the rapping itself. contrastingly, nothing about thugs performances, from a technical POV, are nearly as impressive. yet in 2015 he was 100% a better rapper than kendrick on wax

well, I hold all the rappers to the same standard.

Like for example, I love Kendrick, he's a good lyricist but I don't consider him as a "great" lyricist. To me the last really amazing lyricist in mainstream music was Lupe.
And to me a rapper with a good flow is just being technical, not lyrical,... it's the same s--- for the rhymes & delivery,

well see you cant compartmentalize the critique like that. its always about the overall picture, not boxes you check along the way

Also @Narsh I don't think we need to zoom out before 2015 and talk about comebacks, Future was better than the music he was making but was driven by desire more than creativity. I used to be heavy in to judging an artist on his discography because I stan Kanye. Now however, I just follow the 50 Cent philosophy in which I rank artists by their "moments".

Wayne was the best rapper alive at one point, Drake was the best rapper alive at one point, Kendrick was the best rapper alive at one point, and Future is currently the best rapper alive.

Also talking about who the "best technical rapper" is stupid because Kendrick can't ride beats the same as Young Thug (this is such an surface way of describing what he really does), and Young Thug can't write at the same level Kendrick can. The same way, when you look at boxers, Floyd can't punch as hard as Canelo can, but Canelo can't counterpunch or slip punches as well as Mayweather. But who's the better boxer? The one who channels his skill set and does the most with it.

Everyone gonna have a different definition of how to define "best rapper" though, I mean some people are still saying it's Eminem for whatever reason.

This is pretty much the first time I see a publication calling thug "best rapper of 2015" and it seems to me that they gave him this honour for the amount of projects he dropped, not for his rapping ability.

You can give him best album if you want, I would disagree with that but music is subjective so that's fine, but calling him "best rapper" is something else, the guy was basically ignoring a lot of other rappers being better than him...like Eminem alone was better even though his music was garbage.

i was talking about the general narrative that future's a workhorse/has crazy consistency etc. which is all true, but thug quite literally surpassed it last year and not a word was said

    not after WATTBA :lmaooo:

Well usually I'd say the one that comes out with the better project but that contradicts what i was trying to say. i get what you're saying though, but i was saying to the other guy, you have to consider all the different aspects of being a rapper and see which artists executes which aspects better and then by what margin. obviously things can get muddled by personal preference/taste, but as a critic (if you're one to call yourself that) you need to be able to take your bias out of it. Like, as far as writing, any other year i wouldve said obviously kendricks better. but in 2015 he failed in a lot of notable ways as a writer for me. While thug only continued to grown and expand on his skillset in that area. so, as far, as 2015, i think its actually clear when it comes to thug vs kendrick, but i get what you mean overall. if we were talking about their entire discogs thus far, it would probably come down to if you value thugs ability to craft melodies/flows/his cadence vs kendrick's conviction/narrative. and kendrick can flow extremely well and is very nimble actually (even if he didnt really exemplify that in 2015), so it would be close. very close. i stanned kendrick as well in case people forgot lol

I'm not mad at you for thinking this. The thing about Young Thug is that it's hard to get a deep appreciation for him unless you really let his discography soak. The appeal grows as you come to realize how he can do so much with so little. He can turn a 20 second loop in to a song with a range of flows, range of emotions, and bless the track with more than a few 'moments'.

Where I do think you're wrong is when you say Eminem was better. Nothing he did in 2015 was as nice as:

In fact, nothing he did in 2015 was nice period.

Also the reason I didn't like his pitchfork piece was because I wished he would have picked a more worthy narrative to write about.

The Drake/Meek beef was about as satisfying as flat soda, it sucks that that joint was the defining moment of 2015 in his opinion.

Thugger is at his best when he dumbs it down and lets his cadences carry the song in my opinion.

    Again is :allears: Power too.
