      Dog Day Afternoon 1975
      ★★★★½ Watched 14 Aug, 2017

Excellent narrative structure and cinematography convey dense themes of social alienation, hypocrisy, and corruption.

      85/100 - Excellent.

      Zvenigora 1928
      ★★★★★ Watched 10 Aug, 2017

s--- is mad hard to follow or have the patience for, but also incredible af and experimental way beyond its time.

      95/100 - Amazing.

    • @Charlie Work - What you think of Dog?
    • @coil - Loved Zvenigora, though it was a tough watch. It's mad brilliant and poetic, never really seen anything like it. And it tops Earth for me, which is really saying something.

I saw this one back in my days, one of the Wayne's best, it is an unlikely skower paced film considering other Waynes works but still has the essence and you wouldn't expect the opposite from a director like Hawks. I would give it an 8.

Never posted my thoughts on BL...

highly stylistic drama in the vein of the Pusher Trilogy or Scorsese's Mean Streets. Like those, its affectations in mood and expressionism contribute towards a lasting aesthetic impact. Though at times over the top or on the nose, its narrative fails or triumphs are shrouded by emotion and therefore become a minor player of the film's cinematic reach.

    81/100 - Great.

word. Ferrara's a genuine cornball and aesthetician. The kind of film I could see going up the ranks on rewatches. .

    Rio Bravo

A beautiful character film, wherein the Western elements serve as a backdrop for a more pronounced drama of a group of people coming together for a cause, and of building relationships based on moral similitude.

Besides the many mishaps in continuity, this is a true masterwork, and as far as Westerns go, sits up there with Johnny Guitar, a kindred film in its focus on people rather than action. The dialogue and body language is also very complex and subtle, giving the film much depth and return value.

    92/100 - Amazing.

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie mounts Casavettes’ unique hand in raw realism via a narrowly focused narrative on a singular character’s plight of life. Shots, with a narrow angled camera–tend to bring background to the fore, intimating the character’s narrative while substantiating it through a phenomena of distance and alienation. The viewer is transformed into an observer in the crowd, a part of the mix, an active participant in the hero’s, or should I say anti-hero’s, journey.

Unlike Casavette’s features which are belabored by exposition, dialogue, and a heavy handed directorial temperament, Bookie has moments full of life, intuition, and poetry. Casavettes allows some freedom for the magic of cinema to enter the film instead of stifling the art through acts of control. The scene wherein a coffee waitress auditions and the following use of theme music during a reflective cab ride demonstrate Casavettes heretofore unseen aptitude for expressing art through aesthetic alone.

Tie this in with depth of character, subtle and succinct character denouement, and an understated use of metaphor in the facade of strip-club entertainment, and we have true example of Casavettes’ brand of American indie-art.

The film has turned my previously dismissive stance on Casavettes, unchanged previously by the impressive but flawed Woman Under the Influence.

    90/100 – Amazing.

Update first post and fix it yourself pleb boy.

    The Ten

Begins strong with some really humorous on the nose comedy. but the shtick wears thin as it carries on for 90 minutes.

    65/100 - Decent (2.5)

I've fallen off with this film club because I've been really busy finishing up my film and other life obligations, but I'm happy to say that timbre. is finally completed!! I hope to get it to anyone who's interested in seeing it sometime soon.

Since the last few weeks has been messy with Kam watching the films by himself, we decided that we'll come full circle to the beginning of the film club this week with a Hong Sang-soo film. This is his feature from last year that finally made its way online with subs this week. I've been waiting ages to see this so hopefully it'll work as an entry to get me back into watching movies.

Week 18: Yourself and Yours (Hong Sang-soo)

Twin Peaks made it hard for me to care about other movies for a while, especially since it inspired me to go so hard in my own work. But if anyone can get me excited about watching movies again, it's HSS. Got that Voyage of Time on deck as well.

Though next week I'll be in Romania shooting my next film so I can't quite commit to being back on top of watching stuff yet lol.

Thought we were watching the new Sang-soo films lol

Yourself and Yours was really sweet, got on board with it once I realized it was supposed to be a comedy. Not much of it resonated after the beginning, but it's impossible to not be enamored with soo's dialogue. Nobody makes characters as real as he does.

On the Beach at Night Alone is a masterpiece. Too much to talk about right now.

I'm taking a 3 week break for VIFF.

    Claire's Camera is excellent, though.

    I'm about 20 films deep
