Jan 13, 2018 Might seem a bit harsh, but I'd be happy to have a more nuanced discussion about any ones that stick out.
Jan 13, 2018 So have you not seen the rest os season 3/4 or are those zero stars? It's been a few years since I've seen season 1/2 so I can't speak on them too much other than the fact that I understand why you wouldn't like "The National Anthem" and I'm glad you liked "Fifteen Million Merits," cuz I think that's clearly the (or at least one of) best one. I remember liking "White Christmas" too but that might just be John Hamm bias. Which one did you have the most problems with and which one did you think was the most successful? Stranger Things? There are horror elements but the vibe is more akin to adventure films like The Goonies and Indiana Jones imo.
Jan 13, 2018 Fifteen Million doles out information so appropriately. You get to piece together how the universe works just a second before they let you know a little more. I'm a sucker for dystopia, and though the romance in this kind of oppressive setting has been aped off of since 1984 (same with the tragic ending), it's great when that just kind of becomes the prime mover for the closing message about commodifying resistance. Exploiting labor, neoliberal consumerism. A wealth of hefty topics. A bit more refined than "what if you could block people in real life". White Christmas, as well as White Bear, both suffer from being movie length ideas fit into a form that kind of undermines them imo. White Christmas is jam packed with ideas, a big one being recycled from Entire History of You, and you can't really see the trees for the woods. White Bear manages to pace itself better by putting all the interesting stuff in like the last 5 minutes. It's a revelation that re contextualizes the experience, but it just comes off so cheap and lazy. The National Anthem is terrible. Yet to read an opinion that made me waiver on that. It's like how Eminem made sure his singles were "divsive" and "edgy". Just a really cynical way to hook people in to your show and get talked about. It tries to capture some of the absurd fatalism increasingly present in our culture, as does The Waldo Moment, and it doesn't do it very well. Hayley Atwell's performance in Be Right Back is great. I'm really impressed with what Joe Wright did with Nosedive. He takes the most basic formula of the show, what if ____ was irl, and manages to remain strictly focused on it while addressing stuff like the myth of meritocracy, social contracts in the electronic age, and a dozen other interesting ideas. Well, focused until it kind of spirals into this really trashy tragicomedy. Like none of it feels rushed, despite it being so dense, and he manages perfect little moments like that exchange via Facetime where she gets offered the maid of honor and they're manically squealing like a Coen Brothers caricature by the end of it.
Jan 17, 2018 Watched creep 2 earlier today, pretty crazy, probably liked it more than the 1st although I don’t remember the 1st super well. Watched 47 meters down last night, movie about 2 sisters trapped in a shark cage, it was better than I expected but nothing amazing. Need some new TV shows to start on soon, thinking of stranger things or mindhunter since I never really gave those a good shot. But I’d be open to other shows too, mainly thriller type stuff.
Jan 17, 2018 I'm new on the section. I'd appreciate if I could get a review on what to watch from the new upcoming shows on Netflix as I don't want waste my time and leave the show from the middle.
Jan 17, 2018 Watched 1st episode of stranger things, it was okay but didn’t really hook me in and I’m not really that interested in watching more.. does it get better or is that about what to expect from it? I know everyone thought it was amazing, so may watch the 2nd episode too and see if it draws me in more.
Jan 24, 2018 Anyone got anything good to recommend on there? Bored at work, horror or thriller genres mainly, a TV show would be fine too.
Jan 27, 2018 How to watch US Netflix as there are many ways to go about it? I'm confused which one to follow and how credible they are.
