Dec 13, 2016 The dealer from the 2nd verse of 03' Adolescence? Thinking about how 4YEO made me feel compared to FHD this thought popped in my head. Maybe thats why he put this album out 2 years after FHD to commemorate him in a way. Also this made me think back to one of my favorite features of 2015. Heres the verse if you arent familiar Spoiler [Verse 1: J.Cole] Wonder what it's like, how a n----- k--- a n----- on sight Did he hesitate? Think about his life, think about his kids, think about his wife? But that n----- heartless, group homes, n----- never had no fosters Cause who taking home the little black kid, poor thing, his momma is a crackhead So the state raised him, and the hate raised him They clowned on him at school but he fronted like it ain't phased him s---, now it's about getting money cause these cool n----s think his s--- is funny Gotta have clothes, gotta have dough, hoes ain't checking unless you got plenty, now a n----- selling dope Holding onto a little hope of a better life, huh, but that hope fades so quick Cause he getting paid so quick He be robbing n----s just to cop the s--- the minimum wage won't get Young n----s trapped, young n----s strapped, heart turned black, won't turn back Was this verse based on his fallen friend? It's possible but probably a reach by me Being that Cole has been depressed lately displaying his feelings about police brutality, mass incarceration and institutional racism in his latest songs and features, maybe his friend who died is a huge part of his frustration and sadness. The countless killings of unarmed black men in the media only continue to reinforce the memory of his friend and 4YEO may have been made just to clear his conscience in a way Food for thought
Dec 14, 2016 I was just talking about this with my friend. Then we started wondering if this is true then does the baby that he named Nina in the title track related to the Nina in The Storm from waaaaaaaaay back
Jan 1, 2017 I was thinking about this too because the guy couldn't have JUST passed right before 4YEO since Cole said he was 22, if people think it's based on 03 Adolescence that would make him too young to even be running the streets with him back then.
