Feb 12, 2020 For me, it sorta depends. When I discover a new artist who's currently making music, I usually start with their most recent album if it's one that came out recently, then go chronologically after that. If it's an older artist I'm interested in, I try to go 100% chronologically and start from the beginning. If it's an artist I'm not necessarily interested in right off the bat but people have recommended to me, I try what they recommend or their most acclaimed album first, then go chronologically after that if I like them. Regardless of how I start with an artist, the most important thing for me personally is to give myself a solid amount of time with each album before moving into the next one. I've found that I get burnt out fast if I listen to an album once or twice and be like "wow I love this" then keep moving through their albums every couple days.
Feb 12, 2020 i always go from their first release to latest. sometimes looking @ their scores on rym to get an idea if what i’m getting through.... if that’s what you mean.
Feb 12, 2020 Yup exactly Like I said in OP the most important thing to me is to give myself time to spend with each album and digest it instead of just blazing through their discog because then I get burnt out and it kinda blends together for me
Feb 12, 2020 I look for all of their features first always if they're not like that or it's a band, yeah I do the same and listen to like the newest to the oldest
Feb 12, 2020 I first check out random songs to see if the style/voice etc clicks w me. Because w so many artist out there I'm not gonna waste my time trying to get into rappers that don't interest me. Then if I like it I'l mostly ask here were to start (album wise) and I do that.
Feb 12, 2020 It's funny how different people are with this, cuz I'm not someone who listens to singles/playlists much so I wasn't even thinking about that route when I made this lol. Only time I start out listening to a single is if it's a new artist who only has a handful of songs out and then make a mental note to check out their album when it drops if I liked their song.
Feb 12, 2020 I usually check the album that has any song I heard/know. If I don't recognize anything, I go by recommendations. I don't think I've ever discovered new artist whose song I've never heard or without any recommendation
Feb 12, 2020 Same with me. When i discover a new artist for me(hear a song on the radio, in a club , with friends or discover someone on youtube) i check 4-5 songs from him on youtube. And if I like what i hear i start listening with his/her first album.
Feb 12, 2020 True it also depends on how you listen to music in general. As you know I don't care about albums that much, more about the songs (u know what I mean). So when I discover an artist I like I go looking for other songs I like from them. By listening to singles, albums etc. So if a 12 track album has 8 songs I like I just keep them and the other 4 are gone. Which makes it a solid album for me. It really depends what you value the most / what your style of listening is I guess. Like if people complain about 1 song ruining an album I'm like yeah so delete it and is perfect lol. That is not the right way to judge or rate an album (you have to judge all of it) but as far as listening goes who cares if u delete a song? With so many g.d. songs I am not gonna listen to a 4 minute song I dislike, never. But for some it might ruin the album experience I guess.
Feb 12, 2020 I tend to explore a few songs on YouTube, before accidentally stumbling onto a full project by whoever I'm listening to. If I'm hooked, I'd jump straight into their catalog sometimes by best project first and then chronologically. Usually varies depending on my mood now that I think about it?
Feb 12, 2020 I only have a problem with that type of thinking when people judge an album as if those songs aren't there at all. Like you can't pretend the bad stuff isn't there when you're judging an entire work. But that doesn't mean a couple bad songs can ruin an entire album that's otherwise great. For example Still Brazy has "She Wish She Was" which I think is awful and is a blemish that needs to be discussed on an album that has otherwise successful, progressive politics—but I still believe the album is a classic despite it.
Feb 12, 2020 If I hear one song that I like, I usually skim the top songs on Spotify. Then if I like that I’ll listen to the latest project and go from there.
Feb 12, 2020 True! But yeah like I said one's perspective can be different. Not bringing it up on purpose but its a good example: music to be murdered by. It has like 18 songs. At least a handful are boring/meh so 1/3 of it, which brings the album down for sure. U can't deny that. But on the other hand, it has (for me) like 10 songs I really like. So if I delete 8 songs it still is a (short) very enjoyable album for me. And for that I like the album. But of course u can't act like the others excist. But yeah thats why I personally value TBT reviews a lot more. Where's urs for murder btw??
Feb 12, 2020 What @Bojack said I almost always go chronologically, it’s always interesting to hear an artist’s progression
Feb 12, 2020 If I've literally never heard anything from them I'll suss out a few songs quickly on YouTube and if I like them probably go most recent album and then chronologically after that. Sometimes I might even go backwards, I'm not actually sure now that I think about it.
