Jun 19, 2016 Reason I'm asking is because Kendrick and YG are both from Compton, both have narrative driven albums and both have unique styles. I like both albums but I want a concensus from this community. Which is the better album? or
Jun 19, 2016 Thanks for reminding me. Any votes by a Besky alt will be automatically invalidated. Seriously though; why the f--- did he create that zeerax personality in the first place? I really thought he was cool but with him being Besky? f--- man, get a life. I want serious discussion. Who is truly carrying Compton/Bompton and who placed it on the map?
Jun 19, 2016 Kendrick overall was more narrative driven, was more versatile lyrically, and had more depth. Easily kendrick's best project.
Jun 19, 2016 I agree. But YG also represented that life as well. He was able to use Mustard's beats in order to fill in blanks that Kendrick could not do because he was living a different life. You've got romance and more violence in YG's story plus it feels like you're actually him. Just saying.
Jun 19, 2016 gkmc feels more immersive, has better varied production and has Kendrick rapping at his best. Felt like a magnum opus. MKL felt like a stepping stone for YG. His rapping was great but wasn't as captivating and the production does get repetitive and one note as the album goes on.
Jun 19, 2016 There we go... To me, GKMC will always be a high point in rap because the album mixes old-school sensibility with new-school sensibility. Money Trees, Swimming Pools, Poetic Justice, Sing About Me are all classics. Entire album equal 5/5... But, YG has that west coast sound and well, it's also 5/5 because it's modern, it appeals more to fans of N.W.A and you can't tell me that his life in Compton is more reflective of what people thought was going on. Very hard decision to make.
Jun 19, 2016 YG makes unadulterated West Coast music for sure. I said before it isn't as captivating but I lie his stories are vivid for sure. His experiences led to MKL after all as he's a Piru I think and is laying bare his experiences on the album whereas Kendrick was more observant in his storytelling aka similar to what Nas did with Illmatic.
Jun 19, 2016 You know what, f--- it. Mini-competition #2Which is the better story? or... Mini-competition #1 is still going on and will be going on for the duration of this thread. Please vote, the discussion in this thread is important.
Jun 19, 2016 Good Kid, Maad City - and it isn't even close. GKMC could be seem as the pinnacle of post-2010 rap so far. Kendrick is razor sharp, his storytelling is absolutely sublime, the topics are great, the production is fantastic. I thought MKL was dragged down by the production. YG was good throughout, his storytelling is great. From a technical lyrical standpoint, I think he can be pretty basic. The production is my biggest problem with this album though: It's very bland, there's not much variation in the sound throughout, and it just gets too repetitive. The interesting thing about the two, is that whilst they're very similar artists rapping about similar topics: Kendrick has a very naive "outside-looking-in" perspective on things, whilst YG raps like he lives that life.
