Dec 28, 2014 but it did flop. those commercial placements are all bought and paid for. the song fell out of the top ten. kendrick's album was supposed to come out in november, but "i" didn't do what it was supposed to do. that's fact. i don't mean that the album won't sell or that kids in the youtube comment section won't love it. i just expect it to be a profound dropoff in quality. i hope i'm wrong. and some critics like "i". some don't. there are only like ten good working rap critics so who cares. EDIT: lol @ citing rapgenius. you care what a bunch of 13-year-old white kids on their forum voted for? okay.
Dec 28, 2014 13 year old kids?, I suppose you have access to their entire member database, you have an opinion.. I gave you a more democratic viewpoint, that's all. If the song was trash and wasn't making any impact, it wouldn't be on commericals etc, 'they' pay Interscope, not the other way around, if their target audience hate it (had been out for a while), they won't go for it. The album is clearly going to have a strong message, it's not going to be a middle of the road album, and that's exactly the type of thing critics go for, so historically, it's very unlikely to go down as a 'flop'. The only time Kendrick ever released anything mediocre was in his KDot days.
Dec 28, 2014 if kendrick were to die today he would be a legend in my eyes from Kendrick Lamar EP to GKMC i can play without skipping a song
Dec 28, 2014 in terms of ability idk who can really....plus he has the TDE behind him which imo is this age of hip hop's Dynasty
Dec 28, 2014 Rappers like Mick Jenkins & Denzel Curry have a future, but not the star quality Kendrick has, hence how he managed to go full circle.
Dec 28, 2014 did you see the rest of their lists? logic and j cole and s--- like that dominates it. these are not the people who determine major label release schedules. you are naive to how the industry works. and what i said is not disputable--the album was supposed to be released five weeks ago, and "i" couldn't cement that. "i" is decidedly middle-of-the-road. it's a safe, conventional song. and the critical reaction tends to be more divided the more ambitious an album is. (you are also speaking as if i don't know where i'm coming from on this.) what an utter f---ing dickrider. "real" isn't mediocre? "compton"? "no make up"? kendrick is a great artist but calm down, buddy guy.
Dec 28, 2014 None of those tracks mentioned are mediocre, Real was great 'in context' with the album, Compton was solid, you might be onto something with 'No Make Up' but it's hardly complete wack. 'i' isn't a middle of the road Hip Hop record, hence why it worked on the platforms we mentioned, but it wasn't a 'safe' track to drop on Hip Hop heads; Swimming Pools was 'safe' with that T-minus insta-hit production and the theme.
Dec 28, 2014 Kendrick is going to move something around 500k with or without a hit single. Cole did 360k with a 3 week announcement. Until the album was officially released, he had no single, no radio or tv interviews, no tv performances. His promo tour consisted of him playing the album privately for fans and radio stations after absolute confidentiality regarding the music was ensured.
Dec 28, 2014 The feeling it gives off after SAM/IDOT is the perfect transition, the hook becomes weak, but the way the voice messages tie into the beat make the album complete. I've never listened to it out of context though, so I can see what you're getting at.
Dec 28, 2014 AOTY, and lakutis is already so far ahead of kendrick. so to answer the threads question, lakutis tbh
Dec 28, 2014 I dunno man, part of it for me it's a real chore to listen to a 6-7 minute song right after a 12-minute song, especially when the 6-7 minute song is vastly inferior.
Dec 28, 2014 I genuinely don't think anyone can. Drake is on par talent wise, but doesn't have the credibility. Going to be interesting if someone does though.
Dec 28, 2014 I think Drake is superior in credibility actually. That is if you take into consideration the album sales and the accolades.
Dec 28, 2014 That doesn't paint the whole picture though.. The same reason most people don't include Kanye in their top 5 (not even Kendrick on Control), is the same situation Drake will be in; makes good music.. but isn't considered a serious MC.
Dec 28, 2014 I wasn't clear in the direction of my post, apologies. I meant credibility in context to street credibility. Accomplishment wise, he surpluses Kendrick by far.
Dec 28, 2014 i love gkmc and i turn it off before the last two-and-a-half tracks play. can you imagine NOT feeling pandered to by "i" i mean jesus how rosy would your worldview have to be
