Why have Mixtapes basically turned into free albums now?

because is a nice excuse if they f--- up.
also some may do it to try to stay relevant while they wait for the label (see shady/slaughterhouse)

Because the internet. Rapping/Singing over old beats/instrumentals is kinda boring. People want original s---. They want you. And you don't really need labels anymore when you can just put your s--- up on Soundcloud, Datpiff, Bandcamp, etc. Also a home studio is cheap af nowadays (Relative to what it used to be). So yeah. Mixtapes are free albums because it just makes sense that way. No one cares about some dude rapping over Lose Yourself for the hundredth time. It's boring.

Way more accessible to. It's a trade off really. Give people free s--- and they'll spend money on you later.
