Jan 22, 2020 OK well explain what you think the double standard is then. I already said he gets some unfair scrutiny but it's not like he's putting out classics anymore. It's one thing to unfairly s--- on middle of the road albums and another to s--- on MMLP/MBDTF/Carter III level albums.
Jan 22, 2020 I know, but its also cringy lol When they started? They are still being brushed off as mumble rappers or 'talentless never having substance'. Thats why I said happens w a lot of artists. Difference is I think people who say that never even gave them a real chance in the first place.
Jan 22, 2020 The anonymity of the internet makes people more comfortable talking s---. It is what it is. Search twitter for any new album from a major artist the weekend it drops and there's a lot of performative hate going on. I agree there's too much performative negativity in the music criticism world as well (I'm definitely guilty of it). It's why I like writers like Hanif Abdurraqib because he can write an essay shi--ing on 21 Pilots while still saying some positive things about them and it doesn't come from a place of hate or pretension.
Jan 22, 2020 I guess it's part of human nature to s--- on other people's parades, especially if they make a lot of noise. I'm guilty of yelling "why can't you recognize this!? you must love this, this is brilliant!" But in the midst of all this there is an actual person called Marshall Mathers who lives to impress people with his lyrics, and I feel like he gets an inhumane dose of attack. As big as he is, no one's skin is that inpenetrable. At the end of the day there's a guy who feels like s--- for doing what he loves.
Jan 22, 2020 That's not entirely true tho. For example why should I go try to convince young thug fans in a thread how I find his albums trash when this artist doesn't appeal to me in general? Edit: and then act like my taste is superior to them cause we dont agree? lmao
Jan 22, 2020 I think he was actually oblivious to all the Recovery and MMLP2 hate. Otherwise he would have done Kamikaze in 2011.
Jan 22, 2020 In a weird way they all consider themselves Eminem fans, just not THIS Eminem they've been hearing for the last 15 years. They were fans at one point and now they're tricked out and deprived of good Eminem. Which is similar to a woman saying "I love my husband, just not a fan of the fact that he beats me every day"
Jan 22, 2020 Oh man you should spend a day or two on ktt2 now that the album is out, the hate here is nothing. lol
Jan 22, 2020 Yes but they are all kanye stans lol. Same way some em stans call 808 and mbdtf bad, same thing happens over there w eminem.
Jan 22, 2020 Still tho its not new that Em is not the Em they knew 15 years ago. He may still not appeal to them and I get the criticism for albums like revival and mmlp2 but this is far from a bad album just cause em is not rapping like he did in '00
Jan 22, 2020 Tbf tho I never seen any extended hate here for ye or jik witch both are bad (and I say that as a kanye fan.)
Jan 22, 2020 Friend have you ever used reddit The xxxtentacion group is like a cult More than once a day though they get their trolls coming in to "he was an abuser, his musics trash" Everybody's got their things, you just gotta close this tab sometimes
Jan 22, 2020 That’s not what criticism is though. Criticism is basically thoughtful engagement with a piece of media or art. dictionary def: “the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work.“ To “criticize” something often has a negative connotation but “criticism” as a concept is not inherently negative.
Jan 22, 2020 That was my point, if you stopped enjoying eminem's music around the time of Encore and haven't liked his music since, you're simply not a fan of eminem and that small period of his where you thought he was good was not the default you need to cling to.
Jan 22, 2020 I dunno to me there's nothing to really talk about. They both came in went and aside from huge fans nobody cared really it seemed. Not much to hate they are just boring and non interesting (imo)
Jan 22, 2020 Hardcore criticism is just what happens when you’re the biggest artist in the world. The notion that he’s the only artist to be placed under a harsh microscope is also not true. There is no musical artist on the planet who’s eaten more s--- the last 5 years than Drake. He overcame it by making great music that appeals to the majority. But there are a lot of people to this day who say Scorpion was a bad album, which I find baffling. Literally, if Scorpion is a bad album, I don’t know what he has to do in your eyes to make a good one. Lil Wayne was also mocked to unbelievable lengths. He was painted out to be this horrible rapper who “only rhymes the n-word with the n-word”. The only thing I agree with you on is how targeted Ems fans seem to be. Like if you enjoy his music you’re just a brainless stan with no discernment for musical quality, which is unfair - but a lot of Eminem fans are also arrogant themselves and are the same ones bashing other rappers on comment sections and blogs. You just really have to look outside your bubble to see the wider view of the scenario. Otherwise it’ll appear as though Em is some punching bag while all other rappers get off scot free.
Jan 22, 2020 Quentin Tarantino said something recently I thought applied to the eminem hate thing. In regard to the hate he gets himself, he said something like "when you've been around for so long, certain tropes get sown into the fabric. If you're a fan of mine, you come to see my movies for those tropes. If you hate me, you're watching another list of things you cant stand". I think that vs. the fact he's so huge makes people who just arent on board rather confused about the situation...and f---ing ape minded morons react to confusion with anger...mostly on twitter nowadays. It's simple really
Jan 22, 2020 agree with most of this post except I think Scorpion is a pretty bad album—and I'm not someone who hates Drake at all. Like the Eminem album its length is not justified at all. As far as his long albums go I love More Life though.
