Cole is the kind of rapper to not take risks. Only a few songs really experiment with his sound but he seems contempt with producing 90's style hip-hop and writing lyrics that only "real" hip-hop heads will get. Without that risk, he's never going to get anywhere.

He's only a meme because it's cool to hate on him, once that wears off then he's going to be a touring rapper playing low-rent venues.

Nah I dont think cole's gonna fall off. He has a massive fanbase of casual listeners and his gimmick of pandering with "certain level of intelligence" lyrics is genius because said casual fans can use it as a shield to block out any criticism. If you don't consider him rap's Messiah, you simply "don't get it" in their eyes.

In reality it's surface level trash but there's millions of people content to not dig deeper than that surface so Cole's career will continue to prosper probably until he retires or dies, I have no doubt that in 2020 he'll still be just as relevant as he is now.

He already low-rent venue in between his world tours and this is what happens. Hence why he doesn't do low-rent venues anymore troll. http://laist.com/2015/06/26/j_cole_concert_wiltern.php

I meant low-rent venues after he becomes less relevant. That wasn't a troll btw, I've seen Jeru the Damaja and Royce Da 5'9 do low-rent venues like Los Globos and The Airliner.

Nope. 2020 is too far into the future. In 2020 the only relevant rappers will be robots with artificial intelligence as it's the PC thing and humans speaking about violence is not allowed so robots do the rapping.

At what point in time were either of those two on a level that Cole is on or for that matter two years ago now?

    Early to late 90s.

Modern era is responsible for Cole's level of success. I'm just saying he needs to switch up his production style and lyrical flow to stay relevant.

I'm also saying that there is a divide between styles of hip-hop. 90s style hip-hop and hip-hop made after that; 50 stayed relevant because he switched up the production flow. Royce Da 5'9 is only relevant in hardcore hip-hop circles who won't even touch Future or Lil' Yachty.

Plus I've been to The Observatory in the OC and boy were there less people there than the Metro Boomin' concert that was going on in the next stage. I wanted to sneak out to see the Metro Boomin' concert because boy was that concert pretentious and boring. There's only so much you can do with 90s hip-hop sounding music.

this argument is laughable at best.
    but I want to understand.

how are a lot of people getting recently turned off by Cole if his numbers are going up? that means he keeps getting people outside of his fanbase (to become) fans

IF you get 2 new fans, but lose 1, then that's a net increase, but it still means a part of your fanbase is leaving you.

He got good numbers but is becoming less respected and talked about in general, he could've done good numbers with any type of album simply because of his name
