Feb 1, 2016 WhatsApp Co-Founder Jan Koum announced on Facebook that his messaging service reached 1 billion (!) users. This happens less than one year after Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in February 2014, resulting in a public debate whether WhatsApp would continue to exist as a standalone chat service or be merged with Facebook’s own Facebook Messenger.
