The whole “Kanye isn’t a great rapper he’s a great artist” thing is corny and played out. He is an artist who primarily raps. If he is a great artist he is a great rapper, unless you want to go purely on technical skill at which point there’s a lot of terrible musicians who are great at rapping.
You are seriously gonna try and tell me Drakes only redeemable album is Take Care? Take Care is probably third after NWTS and IYRTITL, which are both great rap albums. People always say “he’s not a great rapper” because he sings but turn around and say he’s not really singing because it’s like half sung half rapped, when the truth is he’s both an amazing singer and rapper and combines the two well.

Are you seriously going to tell me Eminem’s delivery is what makes MMLP good? Not the well crafted lines, amazing flow, and interesting content (unlike the less inspired TES)?

The fact that Eminem has a career built upon two and a half good albums and five s-----y ones and is still widely considered the greatest rapper of all time by a large audience speaks to the immeasurable greatness of his early work.

And as I’ve said before I’m not saying Pac isn’t the greatest, he could be, as it’s all very close up towards the top, I’m just saying since he was considered so at the time of death, many rappers have rose to the level he was at.

Drake’s career hasn’t gone on much longer than Pacs.

Thank Me Later > 2Pacalypse Now and while Views was certainly a misstep it had more to do with him shifting in a different direction rather than declining skill.

Agreed. I’m not hating Pac. I said he was a contender for top five but with Pac fans if you say he isn’t the greatest, you are saying he’s the worst

"Whatever the reason, Pac was working off the cuff, and he demanded the same from his collaborators. He challenged guest rappers to have their verses ready after giving them mere minutes to write—if they didn’t finish crafting something, or if they couldn’t nail it on the first take, they’d be cut from the song. The only artist who escaped this fate was Snoop Dogg, who slipped out of the studio to perfect his verses from “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.”
Holy s---, didn't know this about the album. Still reading but lots of great tidbits I didn't know so far. Good s---.

a lot of people exaggerate kanye's shortcomings as a rapper. he's a very good rapper, even great in a lot of ways. nowhere near tupac––who, to be clear, is one of the three or five greatest to ever live. it's not a slight to kanye. stop being so sensitive.
i'm telling you that, to me, it's the only thing that even comes close to qualifying (and "close" is a stretch).
i'm not interested in your strawman bs. lots of great rappers sing. pac used to rap in key with the beat. drake is a middling artist who makes some pretty good music and a lot more music that's utterly derivative and disposable.
now you're just throwing around adjectives. how didn't pac (or jay, or blu, or kane, or dmc, or...) have "amazing flow" and "interesting content"? you sound like you're writing ad copy. eminem was really good at his peak. one of the most impressive things about him was the way he filled up space on a record. how's that a negative thing to say?
this is neither here nor there. (it also speaks to something aside from "the immeasurable greatness" of two pretty good albums, but we don't wanna be here all day.)

I don’t want to argue all day so what ill say, like a I said before, is that the names I mentioned are contenders, as is Pac. So me saying one rapper did something great isn’t saying Pac didn’t. @WPG

Seems like a lot of you think I hate Pac. I don’t, I’d probably even say Ambitionz is the greatest rap song of all time. Doesn’t mean other rappers aren’t in his league.

Out of curiosity, what would you say Kanye's shortcomings as a rapper are? Obviously, his lyrics have been spotty on his last two albums, but I'm curious if there's anything else that comes to mind.

I said Drake could rank higher, not that he does. At that level it’s more of a matter of personal taste. And whether or not you like Drake he’s been widely considered for the best rapper alive since 2013 (along with Kendrick). He’s at that level. But like I said I don’t feel like arguing all day about it, so still leave you with a compliment, your article was very insightful and well written.

Were his lyrics really more spotty on Yeezus than the rest of his discography tho?

Not really he would have made more classic albums & been become bigger than he was at the time he passed.

but tbh the whole Pac discussion reminds me of Dunning-Kruger Effect

instead of "confidence" this should say "amount of love for 2pac" and instead of "competence" it should say "amount of rappers I've heard"

Not read the review but let me guess - WPG talks about Pacs life, his career, what was happening at the time, how he impacted but absolutely zero about the music amirite?

I think people over-exaggerate how bad the lyrics are on Yeezus, but the writing is definitely not as tight on something like TCD that he'd been crafting for years or MBDTF where he'd been holed up at Rap Camp in Hawaii for a year vs. Yeezus that has songs he finished in like two hours according to rick rubin. But Yeezus can get away with having pockets of spotty lyrics because it's more about how the songs feel in their entirety and the emotional arc/rollercoaster.
