Yea i guess. Its definitely a step in the right direction but its not really a risk. I feel like he's in a comfortable zone making music he genuinely loves, but he's far from pushing any boundaries or making any really polarizing music (ie tpab yeezus etc)
I hope his next project is something noone expects and not just him tapping into his "warm up" self which sort of seems is the direction he's headed in. I mean itd be cool to listen to, but nothing new.

Definitely wouldn't mind hearing an updated Warm Up style from him, but I get what you're saying.

I mean yea for sure. I wouldnt complain about a few songs with verses like knock the hustle etc. I still think he lacks that album tho

Yea thats been my biggest criticism of Cole for years in regards to how he derails any sort of momentum with a really pathetic bar or two throughout his songs (various examples to choose but his feature on Jeremih's Planes comes to mind). The project itself actually did lack a record like Lit from the last edition but I only care for Cozz really from Cole's camp.

I love Cole but Planes was soooooooo good until his verse. Definitely owes better to Jeremih since he was great on Power Trip.

I don't usually agree with WPG opinions but this is not a bad article at all, although I thought Cole was really good on crystals and caged bird. "...but never shakes the feeling that it's checking boxes, doing X because Kanye did and Y because Pac did." This is spot on tbh. Felt this way bout cole from the jump. The cozz, ari, and lute praise good as well. :idk:

Except when it comes to Drake, everything WPG says is usually on point, or just a millimetre off it.

Cole def broke out as a blend of Pac and Kanye, he still is to this day. I will never play his first two albums top down again in my life (the second one I prob won't play at all), but the reason I enjoyed FHD so much was because he let his production abilities (he's a really good producer) and his cadences (he's got an A in the 50 Cent school of melody) carry the project.

Obviously we've all been saying the writing on FHD could use work (second verse of Apparently), and that some of the subject matter should have been given more thought (Wet Dreamz) but the project was nice.

@WPG. It's a good article. I didn't think a compilation EP was worth a review, but you made the most of it.
